Transfering cassette tapes to PC?
I have a question concerning transfering some of the songs I have on tapes to my pc. Do I just get a cable that plugs into the headphone port on my
stereo and the other end goes into the microphone slot on my PC? I hope this is right. Also, does anyone know of a free software out there that will
let me capture this audio while its playing and save it as mp3 or wav or something like that? I would appreciate any advice I can get.

Adnan,
You'll want to plug into the "line in" NOT the mic jack.
I use Cool Edit, but it's now an Adobe program that's really expensive. Do a search here, there's been some talk about it before.

Taking a cassette player headphone output into a pc microphone input will probably result in distortion, as the voltage will be too high.
If your pc sound card has a line input, use that.
If you have only a microphone input, you may need to get somebody to make you a cable with inbuilt padding. That is simply a small resistor placed
across each of the stereo pairs.
A search of the net will reveal many suitable recording and conversion shareware and freeware apps.

A good, free recorder is Audacity that can be download here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
If you want to create mp3 files, you will need the mp3 encoding library from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?lame_enc
