Lilypond music notation + Turkish notation...looking for sponsors
Hello,
I want to mention a music notation program I'm using now called Lilypond (it's free!!).

I've extolled some of its virtues on another message board a few weeks ago. I'm still using it, haven't felt the need to go back to Finale. Check it
out if you would like a free and extremely powerful music notation program.
I've been in contact with the developer about adding more characters to make real, honest Turkish notation possible. As it is now, only two of the
funny accidental characters are in the program so he needs to design the other few. On top of that he will design it so that it will play back via
midi the microtonal pitches (which is not a substitute for human hands but will be close and interesting to hear). And there are more, complicated
issues to speak of like basically getting it all to work seamlessly.
This is quite a bit of work for the developer and he needs to get paid for it. So I'm putting out the word that we need people to help sponsor the
work to be done. He's estimating approx. 600 EU for this work, maybe it will be less. But, with enough people joining in this can easily be
covered.
As far as I know, this will be the only notation program to take full advantage of the modern day system of Turkish notation without having to create
your own fonts, not hearing the pitches on playback, etc...Lilypond is already an awesome program (one user called it the "zillion-ton gorilla of
music typesetting") capable of creating non-standard notation for many types of music.

I was unaware of lily pond until you mentioned it in this thread. I'm going to check into it though, and it's quite possible that after doing so, I
might be interested in your suggestion.... Mark

Thanks for pointing out this notation software. The piece you transcribed certainly looks quite attractive. I will check out the program.
In case you were not aware of it I thought I would mention that this piece was also recorded in a lovely oud solo version by Munir Nurettin Beken, in
his CD "The Art of the Turkish Ud." His performance is a bit more brisk than that of Ihsan Ozgen's group.

Do check it out. these guys are doing really awesome things with their notation program.
it's free (i always have to mention that in a post regarding lilypond)
the interface is very strange. it gets entered like code and that may turn some people off. but i like it very much. makes copy pasting very
simple.
files are cross platform!
in a seperate post i'll drop in the code for the Rast piece so you can see sort of what it looks like.

Hi,
I love that recording of Munir Beken's. it's beautiful. I chose the Özgen version to transcribe since it follows a little more closely to the
original vocal piece.

I may try the LilyPond software to notate Beken's rendition of the piece, which I had previously transcribed by hand. I am assumng that the program
would allow for the representation of the characteristic Turkish ornamental notes (carpmalar).

ooo that's a good one, i don't know if the proper ornatments are in the program.
what would be great is if you try to do it and if they are not in there, let me know! maybe they can be added.
