Farid video. nagham fi hayati
I have been trying to learn the taqasim played in this video but It seems like the finger positions are so un-natural that Iam questioning wheter its
the tuning he's using that is the difference. Can someone identify what the tuning is in this video please. Then at least I'll know it is my hands
that are failing me and not because Iam not tuned right. hehehe
cheers samir

From what I know about Farid's tuning is that he often tuned his oud lower than 440 concert pitch. Concert pitch at his time (I'm talking in the 30's
and 40's, not neccessarily in the video) was either 435 or 437. From what I can tell, its somewhere between if we tuned 1/2 step lower (assuming 440)
to a little higher than that.
Anoher thing, he tuned his low F to E, so his tuning (from low to high) is
E A D G C
Can anyone else validate this?

As far as I know, he alternated between the F and the E tunings depending on the songs. As for the taqsim, I'm almost sure that the oud is tuned waaay
down lower than it should be, but his oud is just so great that it can handle it and still produce a great sound. Don't be discouraged... Farid loved
to tune down. Try converting the video into an mp3 sound file, and then put it into Amazing Slow Downer, change the pitch, and you're set!
You can also just try memorizing how the taqsim sounds, and then try to test yourself by playing it in a more comfortable position (transposition by
ear). Let us know how it goes, and good luck!
