up-down-up-down breakthrough
up-down-up-down-1-2-1-2, etc., etc. is not my favorite rhythm - many of the songs we perform have it and it's always been awkward for me to do - to
borrow from duke ellington "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing ..."
( ... "do-wop-do-wop-do-wop, etc., etc..")
just recently i changed the way i hold the risha slightly and now it seems much easier to do - there's been a big improvement.
nothing new - i've seen other people hold their risha like this but basically, instead of trailing the tail end of the risha down along the inside of
my palm, i've inserted it higher-up, between the forefinger and middle finger instead. the thumb and forefinger "pinch" at the risha tip remains the
same but now its tail exits between these two fingers instead of from the bottom of the fist.
what this has done is to ever-so-slightly shift the point of contact from one part of the finger-pad on my forefinger to another and for some reason,
i find the "up" motion much more natural and more convincing to do.
it also helps if i concentrate on my wrist - as if this is where the activity is being generated - "swing central."
re-reading this, it sounds dumb but ... as in all things, the fine tuning never stops and i found this to be a real help.

More help
hello Bill,
I am reading your post and wondering what does the front end of your risha look like?
Maybe you can shape it to match the comfort of your hand while holding the risha the usual way. I have found that the usual way makes it so easy to
perform all tricks done by the hand holding the rish right or left.
So, what does the front end of your risha look like?
I think this topic is very usefull for most people.
Thanks for bringing it up Bill
Cheers,
Kind Regards,

dear emad -
the tip is tapered to a rounded point - like most risha i've seen. what's different is the way it's held.
when held in the traditional manner, a smaller area of the finger-pad is in contact with the risha. after being pinched between thumb and forefinger
it extends into the top of the palm, perpendicular to the thumb and forefinger and then trails down at (roughly) a 90° angle before exiting at the
base of the palm.
with the "between the finger posture", more of the risha is in contact with the finger-pad of the forefinger and the risha extends parallel, along the
full length of the forefinger at a flat, 180°. this might account for the slight increase in control i seem to have when returning the risha with an
"up" motion - instead of "lifting" it up with just the tip of the finger i'm "flicking" it up, using the whole finger.
you must tell me if this gets too silly ... we're talking about a tiny shift of position here ...
cordiale salute - bill

absolutely ... i don't believe it either till i've seen it!
here you'll find a detail from the famous "st. martin is knighted" fresco painted by simone martini, cappella di san martino, lower church, san
francesco in assisi, in which two musicians are represented - one of whom is a lute player. the plectrum he's using appears to be a quill but the
hand posture is the same as i use:
http://www.wga.hu/frames-e.html?/html/s/simone/3assisi/martin_1/33k...
if you click on the image and wait a bit, you'll be offered up to 200% magnification.
hope this helps.

you'll have to click on "s" for simone, find his name and scroll through the selected painting till you find the image. might be faster to try this
link instead:
http://www.geocities.com/karen_larsdatter/musicians.htm
scroll down to "st. martin is knighted" click "detail" and (hopefully) you'll be taken directly to the image.

Risha
Yeah Bill,
But this photo is not showing an instrument of the same size of an Oud.
The way this rish is held in the photo will produce a very sharp sound and it won't be pleasant to hear. But you like it and it is easier and
comfortable to hold for you then it is okay.
Magicians get doves out of hats and each of them do it differently.
I will stick to the usual way.
Kind Regards,
