Bonjour Zalzal,

I have that CD. It's OK. About half of the music does not really have any specifically Jewish connection that I can discern.

Here are 2 I prefer:
http://www.midrash.org/mm/20s-cd/ and http://www.midrash.org/salman/

But the best specifically Jewish Iraqi music available, in my opinion, is from the hazzan/oudist/violinist Moshe Habusha: http://www.israel-music.com/search/?cat=0&q=Moshe+Chabusha (Of course, you have to be willing to purchase Israeli recordings. Some Habusha CDs can be ordered through a retailer in Brooklyn, NY, USA [I don't like their customer service!]: http://sephardicpress.com/pizmonim/pizmonim.html).

Also, there is a new 2-CD retrospective on Daoud and Salah Al-Kuwaiti, 2 Iraqi composers who happened to be Jewish: http://www.israel-music.com/daoud_and_saleh_al-kuwaity/their_star_s... I ordered this and should get it soon--I'll post of review if folks are interested.

Peace out,
Udi John

Shalom/Salaam All,

One of the reasons that I am involved in playing this music is that it helps to dissolve the (mostly false) border in peoples mind's between Jews and Arabs.

Best,
Udi John

Hélas "Jean Elrich", the actual political borders between israelis and palestinians are not false but a totally illegal and unfair cruel reality for palestinians, against which resistance is a human right and solidarity a must. (I am talking on this precise situtation between israelis and palestinians, or better said between both gouvernements and not jews and arabs)

Anyhow i completely agree that playing oud music helps to dissolve some borders in peoples mind's between Jews and Arabs.

And any cultural event like this one does so as well

Bonjour Zalzal,

I was using the term "borders" figuratively, and specifically tried to avoid any direct political discussion. We all know that this site is enjoyed by people with many different political opinions and perspectives. I will not embark on a political discussion on this oud page; it is not an appropriate forum.

Besides, I am absolutely certain that playing music that helps Jews and Arabs to embrace their shared cultural heritage will do more to advance the cause of peace and justice than any political arguments I could ever make.

Peace,
Udi John

And also playing music together even if it is not à shared cultural heritage....like Daniel Baremboim does. This man desserves all our respects and admiration.

Here some photos for real shared common tradition, not iraquis but algerians juifs, starting with Edmond Atlan

here

http://www.patrimoine-algerien.org/photos/photos_search1.htm

And let's master Shaheen arbitrate with these wonderful words extracted fm Brian Prunka's link in his previous topic

".....What does music have the power to do? I ask.

Lets take your question a step further. Many people ask me, ‘Can music bring people together?’” he says, grinning. “I always say that music cannot do that. Music cannot bring people together and cannot solve problems.

“Political traditions have great weight and power, especially in our current age of information and media. Art cannot compete with this. But it has much more to do with more profound levels of existence and education. On the popular scene, art cannot replace politics, media and the power of the mainstream, but art can fundamentally help individuals, with depth and vision, to probably enhance themselves, their spirit and their thoughts to become better people.

“Good art that has depth, vision and beauty will definitely help people become better. I am sure of that.” et

Thanks for the link! On the other issue, I think Simon is being a little short-sighted. Just my opinion...

Nice !!!! I am also happy you are happy.

May be we should open a new topic for Algerian jewish music and musiciens.

Have you family photos which you wouldn't mind to post here ?
Have you old records fm cousin Edmond Atlan playing with "abuelo" Joseph Levy ??

Tu sais, je sublime un peu ce monde musical arabo-juif et andalou de l'Afrique du Nord d'avant les guerres mondiales et de libération algérienne.... mais je ne connais presque rien et toute info sera bienvenue

Salah al Kuwaiti CD

Via Google Search, I found a post in this thread relating to Salah al Kuwait's 2 cd Israeli reissue, "Their Star Will Never Fade." But I can no longer find the post here. If anyone has any idea how/where one may buy the record online pls. provide a link.

I write a world music mp3 blog which covers Jewish music as one of its niches.

In the meantime, a good article about the record & the performer's family is at the Haaretz website.

Very interesting article provided by Richard, thank you.
Fortunately the most famous arabic-jewish artist did not get too much forgotten while migrating to Israel. However i imangine lot of usual, normal arabic-jewish musicians, whith their inherited musical family traditions fm all arab world, may be dying in Israel, by all forgotten.

It woul be necessary to produce a Buenavista Social Club with the elder master still alive..

Hi Everyone,

I logged on to post the HaAretz article about the Al-Kuwaiti Brothers, but Richard beat me to it--good work! Here again is the link to order their new CD: http://www.israel-music.com/daoud_and_saleh_al-kuwaity/their_star_s...

I now have the CD and enjoy it very much, although clearly, some of the source recordings used were not in very good condition.

Also, Israel-Music.com actually stocks a fair amount of Arabic music performed by Jews from the Arab world, such as Filfel Gourgy (Iraq), Sliman Elmaghribi (Morocco), etc. Seach under "Oriental," then pick the country (Iraqi, Moroccan, etc.). Unfortunately, you will have to sift through a lot of new synthesized "Bus Station" music, but at least you can hear samples of everything.

Peace,
Udi John
