Increasing Bass Response and Sustain of Oud

This question is for people involved with construction and repair. I was wondering what the general effect on the sound of an oud would be if the braces were scalloped slightly. I assume that the amount of wood removed would be small, and scooped out near the ends, toward the sides. Thanks in advance.

Actually only the tone brace (between the brace just forward of the bridge and below the small holes) is scalloped out in the center but not at the ends. There is little effect at the edges of the face. The Turkish method takes the center of the tone brace down to within 1/4 inch(6mm) of the face surface, and returns to about 1/2 inch (12mm) about 3 inches (you do the math) from each edge. The remaining ends a re tapered to 1/4inch where they butt into the ribs. There are no corner cleats or kerfing to support the face, so the butt joint at the end of the braces provides all the structural support for the soundboard.
