There should be a new member and beginner's section
Asalamu Alaykum,
I'm trying to be brief here, and failing miserably.
I was born in Hong Kong and spent from 93 til recently in England. During that time, I took lessons in piano, guitar and generally messed around with
as many instruments as I can find, including the Chinese Guqin. I've also passed western music theory grade 8 [only just].
Recently, however, I've come across sounds of the Oud and so many of the other instruments from the Middle East whilst listening to Ya Raya7 and Ilham
al Madfai. I've had a quick look at a few Ouds when I was in Dubai for a day, but the high prices of the hotel market, Souk Madinat Jumeirah, meant
that I can only look and touch for a brief moment.
Back in Hong Kong, however, I've had very little success in finding an Oud to start learning.
So, if you know any middle eastern friend that is currently in Hong Kong, let me know. 
I know there's a muslim community in Hong Kong and has been since early 20th Century, but I don't know enough to just go knocking on some stranger's
door asking for music lessons :P

My advice is to go back in time in the forrums... And read a lot. Just get familiar with the oud lexicon and etc. There are verry good oud
informations for the beginer everywhere in here.

As for western music theory you can use it towards learning the arabic one. But you will be disoriented. Have fun with the link below.

Hello Billymak:
I have personally seen Ouds in the Asian region which originate in Indonesia and Malaysia. There they are called Gambus:

For you, while in Asia, this word, "Gambus", may yield more fruit than the word "Oud". The price should be better too. :-)
