Fret tying for saz/tanbur
Hey guys,
Is there anyone around who can give me a good detailed instruction or even pictorial/video aided lesson in how to tie the frets on a saz? I just got
hold of a shortneck baglama here for really cheap, but it needs new frets. I have several other sazes, the main one I play most also needs new frets,
i.e, the extra frets, Neset Ertas or divan saz style.
I'm looking in the direction of either Adam Good here, or Haluk if he has time? Any buzuq makers can help me out?
It would be much appreciated. By the way, I learnt how to do it a while ago and had a short video, but I've misplaced it and never practiced it
much.

I have a pictorial of tying frets on a persian tar-setar. I can scan that too, if you want. Use the right gauge of nylon or you'll get a bad buzz.

yeah I've tried that, but it's not something I can really make sense of. also it's different to what I was told, or at least what I remember i was
told.

Can you please also scan the instructions for the Persian tar and setar? That may also be helpful.

I hope this works. The nylon frets are not as flexible as gut frets, so you really can't make that many knots. In the baglama and tanbur, after step 3
in the pic, they pass and wind the two ends of the string underneath the fret a couple of times so it doesn't come loose, and then carefully snip the
ends. I can't do this (I find it too tidoeus) so I just make this setar type of knot.

You're welcome. Make sure you tie the frets ahead of where they go. Then you pull them to where they should be. There is a taper to the neck that will
make the frets tight.

Paddy, if you still need it I can help you, i have the description in an email. but it won't make any sense to you if it send just what i have, we'll
need to go over it together.
other thing, right now i'm on the road and it's going to be several days before i can get it together.

oh and thanks guys, but my saz doesn't have the dip in the neck, they use a technique with one of those ball-ended sewing pins to pull the wire
through.
