Recording the Oud


Playing the oud is all very well, but to pass it on to future generations it helps if there are recordings of it!

So, here is my question to you:

How should I go about recording the oud? I'm not talking about which mic is best, rather about microphone type (small diaphragm, large diaph., ribbon, etc), mic placement and room type. I have recorded my fair share of spanish guitars, do I treat the oud the same way?

any other tricks used during recording I should know of? Any tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated.

I think treating the oud similar to an acoustic guitar is a good idea as it sits in a similar frequency range. I use a small diaphragm mic. Some of the best recordings I've heard have used multiple mics, I hope I can try that out soon.

Yeah, so far I've tried using a large diaphragm mic with a small diaphragm one, sort of an XY position (small d pointing towards the soundhole, large d. pointing towards the fingerboard). I found I preferred the large d. sound without the small one though...

I also tried omni and cardiod patterns and found I preferred the omni, but as I don't have a perfectly treated room I don't think that will really be an option.

For now, I prefer the sound of a large diaprhagm condenser set to cardiod, with a pretty flat frequency response.

maybe I should try out a stereo setup with two large d. mics. Or experiment with even more mics. We'll see...

Where do you record by the way? You have a properly treated room?

Two mic techniques I tried that really work; Two small diaphram mics (KM184's) in an XY patern like was described above then a large diaphram mic set on the cardioid pattern between the two 6 inches behind the XY mics and a second large diaphram mic 5 feet behind it on cardioid pattern. Put the earphones on and play, shifting around until yo find the sweet spot and then hold onto your water, it's great. I did a C.D. recently, all overdubs with oud, bouzouki, guitar, Hawaiian guitar and used it for EVERYTHING including vocals. There is also a new B+K miniature mic that I recorded with that blew me away. You know how you can never get the mic close enough to the face of the instrument? This is so small you stick it to the face on a tiny stand. It's now 1/32" away from the top. Twango Deluxe! It makes the oud sound huge and size does matter. D.L.

Wauw, I'm gonna try that 4-mic setup real soon, sounds interesting. A lot of work though!

Samir, thanks... that's valuable info indeed. Interesting that he uses the neumann for live settings too. I wonder how his studio setup looks like though...
