New oud owner questions

Hi All

Just bought my first oud. If there is any interest, I can post some pics in a couple of days.

The oud is a floating bridge style. However I don't know if it is an Iraqi style or just an Egyptian with a floating bridge. It was made in Cairo. How does one tell?

How do I determine the correct position of the floating bridge?
Are string length and scale the same thing? I suspect that they are, just not sure.
Is the optimal position over a brace or between them?

I have seen references in the forum and elsewhere for between 57 and 62.

Thanks

Ron

Hi,

Your oud's total string length (from inside of nut to inside of bridge) should be equal to the length from the inside of the nut to the imaginary line exactly where the neck meets the body (neckjoint) times 3.

In other words, where the neck meets the body should be 1/3 of the total string length.

My oud's neck (from inside edge of the nut) meets the body at 19.5cm, and the total string length is 58.5cm (to inside edge of bridge).

Use harmonics at the fifth (neckjoint) and compare to fingered note there to make sure you are pretty close - if your action isn't too too high it will give you a clue how close you are w/ the bridge placement.

Hope this helps,

That sounds like the exact string length for an Iraqi oud. :)
