Hi Dubai244

I'm afraid I know nothing about making ouds myself, but a good place to start is probably Richard Hankey's website:

http://www.droud.com

Richard (Dr. Oud) has produced a book on building your own oud, and you can find more info on his website about how to obtain the book.

One person who has used this book to build himself an oud is Jameel Abraham, and you can see a detailed photojournal of his work at:

http://www.msocp.com/jameel.htm

Good luck

David

P.S. Both Richard and Jameel post regularly on this forum.

hi David,
Thank you very much, actually that's what i was looking for. but you know, it is better to learn from oud maker by watching him. I tried very hard to find one, but most of them dont like to teach any thing about oud, because they want me to buy it from them only and spend more money...!

Dear Haluk,
May you live another 100 years, austad. I am pleased you are passing along your knowlege and skill to someone deserving who will continue your legacy of oud building. It would be a shame to lose your contributions and discoveries.

-dubai244,
"most of them dont like to teach any thing about oud,"

This is exactly the reason I wrote my book "The Oud, Construction and Repair".
Purchase of the book also includes free technical support for one project or one year. It is my hope that my book will be a source of inspiration for others to add to their skill and experience (Like Jameel has), to keep alive and grow the art of oud making.

Hello Haluk. I was wondering if you had any sound files of your ouds. I've heard some of the saz recordings on your sight, and I like what I heard. If you have any oud sound files, could you send me one to wfspark@yahoo.com? Thanks

William F. Sparks

PS I got your message yesterday, and I'll let you know when it arives.

Thanks Dr.oud ..!

Thanks Dr.oud, actually i have same target of your. first, i want to have my own ouds because i am not happy about the ouds which availible in market. Second thing, you have to pay alot of money and you have to travel to get a good one. Good ouds is not less than $1000 price. But the main problem is that the oud maker try very hard to hide any information about oud making ..... this is really make me upset...!. i want every one who plays oud have a good one.
i am very happy to know you ..Dr.oud

Dear friend,
Many oudmakers like Dimitris l know personally that like to change ideas and discuss about the techniques with theyr concurents,he believes that the concurance is an imortant element for the improvement of the instrument,I am sure that there are and many others that they think like that,Dr Oud I think also thet has the same opinion about it ,but you see some of them maybe they don't have the time to teach someone,I mean that they work for mor than 12 hours per day....
I hope that you do understand my good intentions...

Hello Dubai. Are you more partial towards Turkish or Arabic ouds? Me, I'm partial to Turkish ouds, and maybe it's because of the service I got from Haluk, but that's what I'm partial towards. I also like the shorter neck and higher tones of Turkish ouds.

teaching oud

Hello Dubai,

I have teached 6 apprentices of mine to make ouds and sazs since 1965.I have studied 5 years with my master of oud, saz, kanun and tanbour before I begin to work in my workshop on 1965. I can teach you also. But I want to ask you:Do you have any expreience about working on woods?Have you ever used a saw?To build an oud or another instrument is not an easy work.Let's say I begin to teach you.Can you come and stay atleast 6 months here?
Best for you,to study with books now, until you have some experiences on music instruments.

Regards.

Hello Spyros,

How are you and your friend Dimitris?
I couldn't hear anything from you for a long time.
You can understand, how are we working in hard conditions at dusty workshops. Some guys think it is like a play.
Greetings to your teacher and Dimitris.

Regards from Turkey

Haluk

Any way, i hope that you didnt get me wrong when i said that oud maker doesn't like to provide any information about oud making. i didnt mean you personaly , but i noticed that when i visited syria and egypt, it seem that the makers doesn't like to talk about there Job...:(
I am very glade to know Halukm, please dont understand me in wrong way ....:)

Dear friend Mr Haluk,
As I said and before the work of an oudmaker is a very elegant, responsible and hard work....
I respect all the oudmakers because in each instrument that they make they put a little piece of theyr soul, like child, and they represent a big culture.....
I will send to my teacher and to Dimitris your greetings...
Regards

What is a setar? I don't think Mr. Eraydin makes Persian setars. I do know that he makes sazes, ouds, and qanoons. I believe he also makes terabouks, but I don't know... that's what he has on his web sight.

SITAR

Dear nadir

I have SETAR, Baglama(tukish instrument) and Bouzouki. If you want to see them, you are welcome, just called me. I suggest to try it first and then order it if you like, because it is little harder to play than oud.

I don't mind how hard it is, actually I'm mostly worried about the tuning! There are 60-70 ways to tune this instrument!

Anyways, I'll definitely call you soon Ghazi!
