Hi Modi
I'm also an oud beginner switching from guitar. Here are some references and websites that will get you started, but you can search the forum and you
will have a lot more:
1-http://www.maqamworld.com/references.html to give you a good idea about Maqams.
2- http://www.oud.eclipse.co.uk/maqamlist.html, this is an excellent site that has a few fingerboard diagrams for the maqams.
3-Here are Mikes' links : http://www.mikeouds.com/links.html
for stringing and tuning see oud cafe.
4- This is what I did when i had problems with the fingerboard http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=7154
I hope this helps, do you play any musical instrument? do you read Arabic or Turkish?
Good Luck
Hisham
