Byzantine Secular Music

Can anyone recommend some good Byzantine secular music with some oud involved?

Do you have the Christodoulos Halaris collections? There are many CD's that have secular music, lots of recreated period instruments, including oud.

My favorite are the Akrites CD's, with the music of the Pontic border guards on the edge of Byzantine and Persian frontiers.

As for Zaxarias Hanendes, his compositions are considered Ottoman, and Ottoman music had Byzantine music as one of it's major foundations. His compositions do have the earlier feel though, that you'll find on the Halaris albums also.

Look on: www.greekmusic.com for the Byzantine cd's. They don't list them, but if you email them, I'm sure they'll help you out. There are even box sets of these cd's.

Take care,
