Here is a link to a list of Arab oudist with a very short biography.
http://home.uchicago.edu/~iboulos/arabud.html
I hope it helps answer some of the questions some are asking about whose out there.

That's a good list. The only thing that bothered me was his silly comment about Farid el-Atrache.

Interesting. It's odd to me the divide that seems to exist between the Arbian Penninsular and the rest of the Arabic speaking world - Khaliji,
Sa'udi or Yemeni musicians never do seem to make the lists. Or am I imagining thngs?

Silly comment
I never took the comment about Farid as degrading to Farid's super abilties and uniqueness in playing the oud (maybe that is why his name is
Farid.)
Farid had the right stuff to show off. In fact the message I got from reading the bio is that if you want to listen to great and well developed oud
music that is executed with precision as well as speed, then listen to Farid's stuff.
Peace

Hi Elie,
I agree with your comments about Farido. I also think Issa has much respect for him or else he wouldn't have put him in his list. It's just
that when somebody says, "One of my concerns, . . . " and uses the words "show off" and "flamboyant" to describe his
playing, that's silly to me.
Take care,
Mike

Hello fine people
I disliked that comment about Farido. I also think that the list is rather poor since it does not have a space for George Micheal - He was on of the
will known super stars oudists as well as Mohamed Fawzy - a great composer, singer and oudist too. And I wonder who else got left behind in that list.
I think the writer of that list should have done a better home work before uploading it to the net for us to read.
My respect for who ever he is.

I want to point out that this list is on the website of my teacher Issa Boulos, but these are NOT his comments. Lots of common information on his site
is borrowed from other websites. (you would have to ask him why he chose to do this) These comments are among them. Most of these comments are also
found on our good friend David Parfitt's website. (who some might remember asked for some advice here not long ago on appreciating Farid's
work) I remember reading these long before Issa's website was up. The commentary about Farid is very amateurish. No one with half a brain can
criticize Farid's oud playing technical ability, nor his abilities as a composer. There is no one today with the talent or abilities that Farid
had.

Oh No Jameel
Mate you have made your teacher look bad now.
Did not he look into what's being borrowed , edited and uploaded?
You want people to believe that Mr. Issa has never came across Mohamed Fawzy or George Micheal?
I will pretend you never said what you said Jameel.
Silly comments are not really welcomed in any web site. We all may take new oud players as new stars but we should also admit that if it was not for
Farido and other unique players like George Micheal people like Abadi and many other would not have known that the oud can be played as such.
Sorry mate .. it's okay to disagree right?

***** Like I said in my post, YOU would have to ask him why he did this. I'm not Issa's spokesperson.

*****People believe what they want. Issa is not defined by what is or is not presented on his website.

*****Sure. Incidentally, I agree with you. I don't think Issa should have those comments up there either. But let's give him the benefit of
the doubt.

Hi Guys
I don't think Issa Boulos took the comments about Farid from my site (check here http://website.lineone.net/~david.parfitt/atrache.html ), but the info about some of the other players sure looks familiar!
Best wishes
David

Hey guys,
Why are you guys so emotionally offended by an objective statement?
He said, "An exceptionally gifted 'ud player whose technique is perhaps the most developed of any musician. One of my concerns, however, is
that he tends to "show off" too much and so his taqasim tends to be very fast and flamboyant."
Issa is my teacher too, and I can say with the utmost certainty he holds Farid to the highest esteem. I've seen him play one of Farid's
taqaseems brilliantly. Issa is an instructor of Middle Eastern Music at one of the best universities in the world. He is extremely knowledgable in
this field.
His concerns comes from his perspective as an INSTRUCTOR. Meaning, that he doesn't want students to dwell on the speed and virtousity, rather,
he wants people to see the Farid's display of the maqam system. That's his concern. How many times have any of you told a beginner to
"slow down, and really try to articulate what you're try to say." I know I've seen this advice all over the "Forum
Player's Taqsims and Songs" thread.
Issa definetly respectfully acknowledges Farid's technical ability with high esteem(in the first sentence). He calls him the most technically
advanced and exceptionally gifted. But why should little "concern" get some people all agitated?
As far his web site goes, its not meant to be his top list of oud players. It's just something he slapped together. So don't get all
offended because you're favorite oudist wasn't listed. It was never meant to be presented as the IT list of oud players.
C'mon guys, stop condemning and judging. That's where all the world's problems come from.
Peace and love my brothers,
Sam

Emad, no sweat. I was never angry.
Sam, you're right.
Plus, I wish I had heard that taqasim of Issa's in Farid's style!

Hey guys. I found another list that was updated up until about 2001. I think it's a bit longer, and therefore a slight bit more comprehensive,
than the other.
