oud makers in istanbul?
Hi guys,
for Easter time I will go to Istanbul to buy an oud..
Do you have the address of some good oud makers?
Please help me and give me suggestions! I don't know anyone!
Are there many of them? Do they usually have ouds ready to try?

What do you mean by "for starters you got Faruk Turunz", MatthewW? Could you please clarify the term "for starters"? Did you mean to say "beginners in
oud playing" or did you mean to say "first of all?"

Hi- well, I think there are a couple of reasons why I used the phrase 'for starters you got....'.
First of all the first reason was that usta Faruk came first to my mind as an oud maker in Istanbul.
The next reason I used that term or phrase 'for starters you got' was to imply something along the lines of 'well to begin with you got'.......and
then go on to name 3 makers out of the many in Istanbul so Daniele could start making his list of oudmakers to visit while there.
I did not actually mean 'for starters' as in someone just starting out on the oud.
it's interesting how language can be interpreted in different ways!

Not in Istanbul, but Izmir, there is also a maker name Baris Karatekli. Never tried his ouds but there is very good feedback from his work on this
forum.

If you want to buy 'off-the-peg', rather than 'made-to-measure', then nearly all the music shops in Istanbul are on one street, namely Galipdede
Caddesi. The street starts just by the Gallata tower so it's easy to find. There's plenty of choice there but I'd recommend making a bee-line for
Cankaya Musikevi which is about halfway along.
There's also a handful of music shops at Block 6 of the IMC mall in Unkapani which is by the second bridge across the Golden Horn, i.e. not the
Gallata bridge. Good luck with the oud hunt.
Easter time is also the time of the tulip festival in Istanbul and they have live music at lunchtimes in the Hippodrome, just in front of the Blue
Mosque. The performances are free and of a high standard so catch them if you can.

Hi Daniele,
I would avoid the shops in Unkapani, you will do much better elsewhere...I think your best choice is Ramazan Calay. He is a wonderful person and a
true master even at a young age. He comes highly recommended by my teacher in Istanbul and many others, and I had a great experience meeting him and
experiencing his ouds. And of course Mustaga Copcuoglu makes absolutely perfect instruments as well. So basically I would use Matthew's list. Good

Ramazan Calay's address posted on the website is inaccurate. He moved last year to:

I don't know if he will have any ready-made ouds, as there is typically a 1-year or more wait time for instruments from him. But you should stop on by

Buongiorno Daniele,
I "did" Galipdede St. in 1998. I found only 1 oud I liked. It was a very good instrument with a built-in pick-up. They asked for $975.00 USD and
were not willing to bargain. I couldn't afford that, and was very, very disappointed and would have probably left Istanbul emptyhanded if not for a
certain Sultanahmet area rug dealer. (I won't bore the Forum with that story again.)
I would also like to suggest sending some emails to ud players in Istanbul. Maybe you can develop a bit of a relationship with one who would be
willing to accompany you on a trip to the workshop of a favorite builder. This has proven the best way to get a good instrument at a good price for
many friends of mine.
For a "music scene guide," I've heard good things about Sinan Erdemsel: http://www.oudist.com/ He is a student of Yurdal Tokcan, travels to the US fairly regularly (speaks some English), and has been an excellent
guide for many of my musician friends visiting Istanbul.

I get the same feeling when I visited Galipdede street, hard to find a good instrument and moreover a good price, so indeed it really worth dealing
directly with the builders.
At the same time it worth visiting Galipdede, I mean out of turistic purpose, you may meet many musicians there...just another way to join the good
suggestion of Mr Erlich. It's by visiting this street I get connected with Ali Nisadir, by meeting with a "music city guide" to take his
expression.

recognize a good oud..
of course I will not forget!!
I am quite confused actually! It seems that good makers don't usually have ouds ready to buy, and then shops have often bad instruments and quite
expensive..
The thing is that I am not very expert and I'm still not ready to understand what's "my oud" and ask turunz or somebody else to build one..
I need to try different ones..
We'll see\ I am very excited.. This is really my first oud experience.
Please give me some tips to help me to recognize a good oud!
A part from the sound, the action, and things like these, what should I look at to understand if the ould is well-built and that it won't break after
one week?

Hi Daniele! some things that come to my mind to look out for are- loose braces, the pegs/pegbox area, uneven fingerboard and the neck joint to
body/neck angle.
You can try tapping on the sound board in various place to see if you hear anything suspicious, inspect the pegs/pegbox area to see that the pegs are
not too loose or for any signs of cracks or whatever, listen out for buzzing as you play up and down the fingerboard and to where any buzzing may be
coming from- if the buzzing is at particular areas /strings and if the action seem OK at the nut and at the bridge then it may be due to an uneven
fingerboard.

I'm surprised at all this naysaying about the music shops on Galipdede and the pooh-poohing of the quality of their instruments. While the
instruments may not be the equal of a high-quality custom made oud, I found them to be reasonably priced and of perfectly adequate quality. The one I
eventually bought was from a shop with an extremely helpful and attentive salesperson and is a more than adequately good instrument for my "learner"
status and at approx £260 was far less than the £500 I was prepared to go up to.
So the question you should ask yourself is do you really want a high-quality custom made instrument worthy of a professional or virtuoso player with
the corresponding price tag, or something less glitzy which is nevertheless good enough to develop your skills on for some time to come. If the
latter, then there's a very wide choice on Galipdede.

Well, I am definitely look for a good instrument (not a very very good one) and I was thinking to spend around 1000 euro.
I am not an expert player but not even a beginner\ But i am very ignorant about ouds!
I have tried very few of them. The best I ever tried is a Nisadir oud\ it had a beautiful sound and an amazing comfortable action, but it had a
terrible buzz on the 3th string (I tune it D) in the first and the second position and I didn't buy it for this reason.
The shop (in Rome) where I tried it was selling it for about 900 euro, but several people from this forum told me that this medium-quality ouds by
Nisadir in istanbul costs 400-500 dollars.
I want something like that but in perfect conditions!
Nice and deep sound, good action, and resistent!!
Could I find in Gallipede str some good oud (800-1000 euro)?

I just returned from Istanbul yesterday... In Galip Dede, with the current economical situation you should be able to get most prices down to around
500 / 400 lira (around 233 / 180 euro) for student uds (and some fairly decent uds) and around 800 lira for quality uds. I think Cankaya had a very,
very nice one for 800 lira (you could get that down to 700 I guess) made by an ud professor of some sort.
Most are of debatable quality but if you keep looking (having a guide helps as well, or at least someone who speaks the language)... happy hunting!

i bought my electric oud in istanbul near the galata tower;
in cankaya music shop
i bought it 800 euros with hard case; and i am very happy with it
it's a good quality oud with fishman pickup;
if you're going to buy it ;you need to send an email to cankaya shop; they will send it to the cankaya music shop .
