Oud Will Not Stay In Tune!

Every time I tune my oud, a couple minutes later it goes right back out. I'm getting so frustrated. I have a 5 string oud; I don't have the 6th pair. Does anyone have any tips/suggestions on what I can do so that my oud doesn't keep going out of tune.

And I also wanted to make sure I am tuning it to the right notes. I'm tuning it to E2, A2, D3, G3, C4. Is that correct?

One other thing, do you recommend any books that will help me learn how to play the oud or any classical Arabic pieces that I can learn to play.

Any tips in general will be great!

Thanks!

Hello and welcome,
Gregs answer is certainly true, there is a lot of material to be read.
One thing that springs into the eye is what you write about your tuning - if you use usual oud strings or guitar strings, the tension might be to high for the pegs with this tuning - and then they may slip.

Hi there,

maybe you have an oud that needs some luthier attention. Bad pegs?

Try peg dope for violins... that will help the pegs from slipping...

Hi!
The tuning is quite ok,even if as far as I know the 5th string (counting from the smallest one) is usually tuned G or F. But anyway, this is not a problem concerning the slipping tuning.
For istance: is it a good oud or a cheap one?
Does it have ebony pegs or what? Pegs are very important in ouds, and very cheap ouds usually have bad pegs and bad pegbox.
Strings tension is also quite important\ for example, I had problems tuning a turkish oud C G D A G C (from the smallest), which is not a turkish tuning bur an arabib oud one.
The turkish one will be similar but one whole tone higher.

But in general if the oud is not very bad, and pegs are ok, you shouldn't have big problems with tuning even if you change tunings or strings tension..

Good luck, and welcome!
