a question about pyramid strings
I understand that the Pyramid strings come in sets of four doubles and one single, or five doubles if one wants to purchase an ectra bass string. So,
my question is, what to do for five doubles and one single in the bass. Do you purchase a bass string from another company or is it the highest
strings that are extra. I use D'Addario which come with five doubles and one single. Any comments?
Thanks in advance,
Roy

They come in sets of 5 doubles. I purchase a classical E
string(D'Addario) for the single bass and tune it to C. I really like the Pyramid Super Aoud set strings. They're alot thicker than normal
and I feel give the oud a deeper sound.

Thanks David,
That clears things up. It is good to know that a guitar string will work for the bass.
Cheers,
Roy

roy -
i haven't tried pyramid strings - only because in the time that i had waited for them to get back to me i had waited patiently, given up, ordered
and then received another d'daddario set from the united states.
for what it's worth - and to complicate your enquiry even further - i would like to recommend nylgut strings from aquilla. there's been
quite a lot of comment about them on the messageboard, if you would care to have a look.
in addition to what has been said i'd like to say that - in my case - i think they bring something extra to the sound of my oud. the other
strings that i've tried all performed more or less as they should and i was very happy with them. but the ones from aquilla do that and more.
to me, they produce a very sympathetic sound, almost as if they were specifically made for the oud - much more than some all-purpose nylon stretched
over a sound board.
the only negative comment i've ever heard about them came from a professional lute player who uses real gut strings. he said some of his
students use them and in his opinion they produced a dead sound. i couldn't understand this until i realized he teaches renaissanceand baroque
lute, which are played with the fingers and not a plectrum. (i don't think nylgut strings for the classical guitar would produce a dead sound
but - it's his opinion, not mine.) in any case, with a plectrum, the nylgut strings on my oud make a very balanced, fullsome sound in both the
top and bottom register.
(i do not own stock in this company, by the way...)
all the best - bill

Nylgut
Compared to real gut I suppose nylgut will produce a dead sound. But then very few people can or want to spend a huge amount of money stringing a lute
- involving anything from 11 to 24 strings - with real gut, and even if they could, there are problems with stability and fragility to consider.
I've been using nylgut strings on my lutes for about 6 years with no complaints, and I find that they are stable, robust and produce a good sweet
tone. I've not tried Aquila's oud set, but if their lute strings are anything to go by, they are a far better option than nylon. And yes,
the only better thing would be real gut, but prepare to have a hole blown in your wallet and to spend more time tuning and changing strings than
playing.
I would love to see a picture of this Abdo Dagher oud as well!

Hello Mourad,
First of all, wow, what a lovely oud. It looks almost exactly like the oud that was in the German made movie, "Al Oud". Thanks for sharing
those pictures.
Take care,
Mike
