horn risha care and feeding?
i just got a set of the six cow horn risha from mid-east mftg... they seem like some interesting material to experiment with! they came in a sealed
plastic envelope and were quite sticky with some kind of residue right out of the package; i assume this is leftover from some kind of soaking or
cleaning treatment they do.
i've read here in bits and pieces about horn rishas needing to be soaked in oil, but there's not a clear definitive thread or post on this
subject that i can find ( what kind, how long, etc) . Once i clean this stuff off, then trim/sand/ shape to taste, is there any kind of care and
feeding maintenance procedure i should be doing?
thanks!

I use buffalo horn rishas and I didn’t need to oil or humidifier them. I didn’t file them either: I only led the use to sharpen them.
By the way, I received dark and light coloured rishas, the transparent ones are better for me to do the trills (but cow rishas perhaps are different).

interesting, jazzchiss; where do you get them?
shaped and sanded several of them a few days back; testing and tweaking the shape and point , etc., since. So far, I love the sound and feel. Using
a drop of my wife's skin cream (Oil of Olay Rejuvenating Serum, it's working great) after shaping or playing, then storing them in a good ziplock
snack bag.

I use ballistol a very special oil, highly recommended for all sorts of critical use.

Many musicians use it for oiling the fingerboard too, e.g. fretless bassists.
