I agree with your thoughts about gimmicks, although im not sure that it is one!

Its more a demonstration of technique and practice drills, but in an artistic manner. I felt it was quite educational and something that I would like to add to my own practice routine, perhaps taking the some of the monotony out of hand position practice.

In any case I find his playing here more interesting than some of these new recordings full of his lovely chords.

I don't think it is meant as a "look at me" type gimmick, Naseer has in the past shown a number of ways an oud can be played by people with disabilities from war, - i.e. one-handed and one-fingered techniques.
