Floating bridge fall off

Dear Oud specialists....

I have recently bought a Oud (medium size),when i take of the strings the floating bridge fall off the soundboard.

My question is : Do the floating bridge have to be glued on the soundboard or does it have to be staying loose from the soundboard.

My second question is: If the floating bridge has to stay loose or be glued,is there a measurement where the floating bridge have to be placed from the end of the Oud,or the distants from nut to floating bridge.

Sorry form my english is not that good.:(

Thx already!!

Welcome Rachid !

The bridge of floating bridge ouds is never glued as far as I know... So it is better (among other reasons) to change the strings one by one.

About the position, the distance between the neck junction and the bridge has to be exactly twice
the distance between the nut and the neck junction (i.e. the string length).

regards,

Dan

thank you danielo... for your fast replay.

OK,for the Floating bridge i understand that is has not got be glued to the soundboard. What ever the reason may be. I thought the Oudbuilder has forgot to glue something.

Another question: is it better to have the floating bridge on a distance above the brace underneath the soundboard? Because i was thinking that with the tension of the strings on the bridge, the soundboard could start to sink. maybe?

greats Rachid

The exact location is determined by measuring the neck lenght from the Nut to the neck joint. This will be distance X.
The vibrating string length of and oud is 3X.

for example if X is equal 20cm then the bridge will be located 60 cm from the nut.
If its 19.5 long, then the bridge should be at 58.5cm from the nut
if the neck is 19cm long then the scale length is 57cm.

Typically the bridge doesnt go on the brace but rather in the between the braces in the area of vibration

If you need to adjust the bridge quickly, without any measurement I mean, the position may be find by ears:
when playing at the neck/body junction, you should have an exact fifth.
For exemple open string C, if the bridge position is correct, you have to hear a G when playing the note at the exact neck/body joint.

For your second question, some maker put a brass under the position of the floating bridge, but not all. So it depends on the maker of your oud, and may be a wrong position on yours if it wasn't made like this.

Regards
