Simon

Here is a clip of Simon playing his theme and variations (based on a theme by Abdel Wahab). He did a version with string quartet on Blue Flame and with orchestra on his Abdel Wahab album. This one is solo oud. The sound quality isn't great, because it's a live recording.

Thanks for sharing this Brian, it's really amazing. I think this is definitely my favorite version of this piece. It's so great to hear the oud used not only as an emotional instrument, but also as an instrument with so many virtuosic capabilities.

Brian , that was very nice and kind of you to share. Thank you deeply.

Simon is in full control , I do not think I have ever heard to such complicated notes. LOVELY INDEED.

Magnificent!

Its so great to hear this in a solo version! I have both other recordings and the oud seems so distant in those. Even though its a live recording I think the sound quality is fine.

I'd love to get a hold of some SOLO oud recordings of Simon's playing! Saltanah is one of my favorite CDs but I can't get enough Simon solo!

Regardless of how one might find him in interviews you can only be in awe of his astonishing musicianship and technique!
