Turkish oud player, Tolga Bektas
Browsing on YouTube I came across a couple of videos of a Turkish player I hadn't encountered before called Tolga Bektas:

I'm no expert on Turkish oud, but I just find his style really interesting and distinctive. Googling his name didn't yield much, other than that he
seems to be working as an academic in the UK (!) and has translated a few articles on oud from Turkish.
Anyone know more about him, such as who he studied with and whether he gives concerts? Maybe someone can persuade him to record some more stuff?!

Hi David- he does have an interesting style, and makes good use of that index finger of his, I like how he slides it all over the fingerboard  perhaps you could send him an email, I noticed an email address in that Turkish to
English oud translation you mention.

His style is remarkably close to that of the late Udi Cinucen Tanrikorur.

Yes Mavrothis. As I know from a friend who took lessons from Tolga Bektas. He was a student of late Cinucen Tanrikorur.

Are you able to identify the makams used in each of the videos by any chance?

Hi David,
I'll listen again and see if I can recognize the makams. He may be playing something rare, or perhaps something more recognizable but in a transposed
key that can throw you off sometimes.

Mav, I'm pretty sure the 2nd video is Ferahnak. Not sure about 1st vid.

Yeah, I'm not sure about #1. He clearly goes to a transposed Huzzam at the end, and the Huzzam Pesrevi by Seyfettin Osmanoğlu.
It seems to me he is doing a mixed taksim, and transposed, which is confusing us!
You are right about the 2nd one, it is Ferahnak, and possibly a Tanrikorur composition at the end? Not sure.

Mav yep it's Cinucen's Ferahnak Saz Semaisi. Actually in his catalog it's marked "Opus 1." so actually his first piece! Composed when he was all
of...ahem...14 years old (wtf?).
I read somewhere about this, I guess he wasn't even playing the ud yet at this point in his life. Pretty much genius.
