Buying an Oud from Kuwait

Hello everyone! I'm from India, currently half a world away in the UK working towards a PhD. One of my friends from the office is going back to his home, which is Kuwait city, and in conversing with him, he's agreed to happily bring back an Oud with him while coming back. So I wanted to ask the knowledgeable folks here what type of Oud is recommended to be bought from Kuwait. I'm a complete beginner (never played on the Oud before) and I know different families make the Oud differently, so your advice would be much appreciated!

My budget is around £350-£400. I have read other posts on the forum, but unfortunately my friend won't be near those Oud-makers.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard Bharath :)

There are two excellent oud makers in KUWAIT :

1. Ahmad Abdeljaleel, aka Maker, our fellow member of the forum. He's one of the finest living oud makers in the Arab world. You may youtube him if you wish by copying and pasting his name in Arabic also احمد عبد الجليل

I had once reported one of his projects here: http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=13424#pid91...
My favorite oud is this one played by famous Yemeni oud player and singer Abboud Khawaja. As previously stated : this what an Arabian oud should sound like;
Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMAQd002Tm8 .
Most recommended for Arabic ouds.

2. Abdallah Alshatti, another high quality perfectionist oud maker aka Alworashi. He's on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHu79q_f8TuGYMF1i4nR0XA
Most recommended as well, but more Turkish oriented. I once saw a clip of our frirnd Faruk checking his oud, but couldn't find it anymore on youtube.

The problem, though, is that they both are far from your budget.
I believe that we don't have enough money to buy cheep ouds, or any other item. So I advise to raise your bid over 1000£ and you might get lucky and hold one of these ouds.

I wish you success in your studies as well.

Good luck
Yours indeed

Somewhat cheaper are some ouds you can have built in the UK by Mr. Moussa. http://www.magicstrings.co.uk/. Not the caliber of the above mentioned ouds, but definitely closer to your price range.
Best of luck!
