Good question Elie. I have no idea. I'm guessing though that spreading the braces gave it some volume and more sustain. I think the concave brace
allows the top to vibrate more, but I'm not sure that would make it louder.

For the build photos I just use my little Nikon Coolpix 3200. It's got a wide angle lens that distorts a bit, but it does the job. The finsihed oud
photos are with my brother's Nikon D70. The key in most instances is to have enough light that you don't need the strobe. For close shots like these,
the strobe on these little cameras just ruins the shot.

First congratulations for your fantastic work and thanks for sharing your experience.You are a reference in wood working!.
I am living in France (Toulouse) and fan of oud .I bough an oud in Paris last year in order to discover this instrument and to start to practice .(I
play normally flamenco guitar for many years).I am very happy with this oud but now I want to build one .I already started and today I just finished
the mould (I did not dared the open form).My reference is Richard Hankey'sbook and your many advices and tips you give through the Forum.
Richard'sbook mentions the relief of the braces about the bridge due to the concave edge of the back in this area ( 5mm) which forces the soundboard
down giving the Sboard a convexe shape between the bridge and the rosace .
What is your experience about this ? (the Sboard of the oud I bought is flat in any directions)
The second point is about glue : what is your recommandation for glueing the ribs ? Hide glue ,aliphatic resin , bones glue?

Guy, Sorry for the delay. I been off the forums lately.
Luthiers either relieve the edge of the bowl, or make the braces slightly concave. I've used both methods. You can also make them flat. It's all about
how you want to make them. Do some searching through past messages and you'll find lots of info about this subject. For your first oud though, I would
use Richard's method. Once you get the physics of what's happening, then maybe try something different.
I use AR glue for the ribs. But hide glue is a fine choice too. You use a hot iron with the hide glue and little pieces of paper to keep the joint
closed. There is a post here about that too. Go back to the beginning of the forums and start reading. Tons of great info here.

Hello Jameel
I followed your explanations regarding the edge tiles fitting (page9, posted 9-25-2005) .On the picture it seems that a piece of wood is put under the
tiles in order to make the rib edge larger .Is it right and in this case how do you glue it considering that the sound booard is already in place?
