Watch out world !
You will be assimilated (oudimilated)!
Here is a clip from one of the best Egyptian films in the 90's. The story took place in one of the poorest communities in Cairo.

At least the protestors haven't lost their groove. This is on FB.

To the maqsoum rhythm they say: "Hosni has gone crazy!"
To the sa'iidi rhythm, they say: "Condaleeza, Condaleeza, can't you get Mubarak a visa"

ha ha ha ha ha

I just had a conversation with Joe about his Cairo adventure.
I will leave it up to him share the details and pics. However, I would like to share this:
When he arrived with his brother, James, to the OVERCROWDED Cairo airport, they decided to ease the pressure and the frustration off the huge crowd stuck there.

While WAITING FOR 7 HOURS, He took out his NEW OUD (more on that later) and started to play for the crowd :)
Some of the songs were:

§azeema ya masr' wadi al safi

taqasim

Oum Kalsoum Masr tathadas 3aan nafsaha

The two young musicians (Joe & James) had a huge circle of joy around them as the frustrated and tired crowd started to cheer and clap as Joe and James jammed along. Even the police got involved !!!!

Hats off to Joe & James.

P.S. I will try to share some photos/clips later.

I finally got a hold of Hassan in Cairo last night. He is the young man who was offering oud lessons here over Skype video link. He said many interesting things, like that his mother is in the square with him, and:

[2/6/11 05:28:22] we are sitting in el Tahrir square and get out for washing and get back
[2/6/11 05:28:31] the funny thing is my oud
[2/6/11 05:28:50] I am singing with my colleagues there you may see our pics in the media
[2/6/11 05:34:28] we are shooted by guns and still saying loudly "slmea slmea slmea" slmea means peacfully

This isn't him below -- there are a lot of dudes playin' ouds in The Square. This sure looks like a Sukar Model 208. Hopefully this will end well soon, he'll be OK, and some of you who were looking for teachers can get in touch with him (and do your bit to rebuild Egypt's economy) :)

I have to voice my opinion. I`ve been a member for some years and have witnessed many hottly debated topics. And yes, at times, it was a good thing that the thread was discontinued, but in this case I have to use an example. Does it make sense to study, and in many cases be truly immersed in a topic, such as pizza, and only wanting to talk about the tomato sauce, not the dough, the methods of making it, preparation, including points of origin and variations among those points? My Chilean political science teacher called it the "Salami theory", when you cut off a piece of salami in order to study the pizza and not look at the entire social-cultural context. The point: The comments made, in my opinion, were not outrageous or out of context for the forum, as the oud and the music made on it is intrinsically connected to culture, whether it be Andean folk, Black gospel, or Turkish gypsy. I find it naive to disconnect the things that are interconnected by nature. If it is kept to the level as we`ve read in the first posting, I thik it is all right and acceptable by me. Music does not, cannot, and will never exist and survive outside of a cultural context.

Here is a man who dared to speak up and talk back to the Egyptian government. He sings Yamsaharni (oh you who are keeping me awake at night) by Um Kalthum along with Joseph Tawadros on oud. Enjoy!
