Great thread, wonderful playing, good to hear you Mathew you are getting good already!! I'll see if I can send something soon but how does Sekah translate into the Turkish tuning, is the Turkish name for Sekah different (I can't find it in my list of Turkish Makamlar)?

Maybe I should not worry too much about this and just play as I hear as I usually do hehehe.:xtreme:

Best wishes

Leon

Thank you for this post, Samir!
Here's my attempt at a taqsim in Sekah, using the electric oud and recorded in Logic Pro with a bit of reverb. I haven't quite found my sound with this instrument, in terms of picking technique and ornamentation, as well as EQ and effects. I tried to play this taqsim by the book, starting on the C (rast) focusing on all the ajnas in the correct order, modulating on the way down, and then modulating to Huzzam (the hijaz jins on G) on the way back up.. ending on the note Segah (E1/2b) after touching the D# which is not technically part of the maqam, but that's what my book said..
I'm thinking I should put the book down and listen more to what you guys are playing!

Rebetostar-

What is this book you refer to?! Call me a nerd, but I'm in the Middle of Nowhere, North Carolina, USA, and I could sure use a book that has something on modulation!

Hi!
That book is "La Musique d'Arabe" by Rodolphe d'Erlanger, I borrowed it from the University library. It's in French, and the information is 60 years old. It's really interesting though, you only need to understand basic French, they've transcribed a taqsim for each maqam (I didn't play it as written) and there's quite a few maqams which are not listed at maqamworld ( http://www.maqamworld.com ). That would be the first place I'd look for more learning.. have you visited that site?
