Live online lessons with video/audio
Hi everyone,
If anyone is interested in taking online lessons with me, it will be my pleasure to help you out with technique and theory on the oud.
I have accounts with SKYPE and iChat, and having tried them they both seem to work fine. My user name on both services is: outistas
All you need is a compatible video camera on your computer and a microphone so that I can see and hear you. I will accept payments through my paypal
account.
For anyone who is far away and comfortable on the computer/internet, this should be very easy and helpful I think.
Since this is a very long thread, feel free to contact me via email or U2U, and I will get back to you as soon as possible and answer any of your
questions related to the online lessons.
Take care,
mavrothis kontanis

Also if there are other amateur musicians (qanun, violin, ney, saz) in Athens to play sometimes together.

It looks like this thread has also become students looking for teachers, so I'll jump in. I just came home to Eastern Connecticut with an oud, having
had one lesson in Jerusalem. Any teachers in Eastern Connecticut or central Massachusetts or even Rhode Island (Hartford-Springfield-Providence-New
London is about my travel limits)?
Thanks
p.s. I'm new to the forum and really appreciate its existance. Found it while looking to buy my oud.

Oud lessons - Richmond, VA
Hello,
I teach Oud. I am in Richmond, VA.
I began private music study on piano at the age of five, learned saxophone through the Henrico County school system, and began the study of Oud with
my father at age 16. I continued my studies of Oud and Armenian music over the next 20 years with various teachers, John Bilezikjian, Dr. Ohanness
Salibian, and Ara Dinkjian. I am is currently enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University studying Music Theory and Composition.
I am obsessed with studying Taksims and consider myself a student of Taksims for the rest of my life.
And I don't like new electric sounding Ouds. I am old school. I want to hear from an instrument much older and wiser than me.
Feel free to contact me for more information.
Thank you.

I have a question about strange difficulties.
I live in North Carolina, in the Triangle area, where there is a pretty large Turkish community. I've met many excellent musicians, including some
very excellent oud players. I've also worked with baglama players and have played oud and baglama with some local ensembles- but I cannot get anyone
to give me real lessons. I have the dedication, and would certainly make the effort (and pay!), but it seems that either people don't want to teach at
all, or they just want to hang out. I don't understand- is there something wrong with my approach?
Instead of having a teacher, unless someone knows anyone in North Carolina, how can I work on my skills? There are a lot of exercises and information
online, but where do I begin? How do I make the most of my time while I'm doing this on my own?

Hey Jeremy, I sometimes make it out to New London . . . I haven't been up there since december but I'll definitely make it up sometime this
spring/summer. I'd be happy to meet up with you when I do. U2U me your email address or phone # so I can contact you if you're interested.
Brian
and Guhl, your best bet is probably to try to hang out as much as you can and see if you can convince people to teach you a few songs . . . If you can
attend some gatherings with an audio recorder, go back and learn the songs that everyone seems to know, that way you can play along next time.
if you're interested in Turkish style, you can contact Mavrothis here and take lessons via ichat/skype, he's an excellent player and teacher and I'm
sure you'd find it helpful.

Oregon
Hi everyone,
I teach Oud in Eugene Oregon. I have been studying Oud for 9 years. I started with Maurice Rouman in Seattle, and when I moved to Eugene studied
Maqamat with Ishmael (a kanun player) for several years. I have been playing professionally with Ala Nar since 2003. This is the website of my school.

Brian,
Yes I have spoken with Mavrothis, and we'll be getting started as soon as my computer is all set for it...
That's a good idea about the recording. Funny thing about the Turks here is that they never seem to know what a song is called, or they'll call it by
an entire phrase or the entire "chorus" of the tune. However, after a SERIOUSLY LONG time I've been able to figure out one song from another to some
degree. It's a big reach from western ground, and this ain't no 12- bar blues. But, what I am coming back to these days (thankfully) is that the love
of the music is all about the process, and not the results. So long as I just keep playing and not worry so much about cataloging and categorizing
every great tune I hear, I guess I'll be ok. We're lucky to have these
traditions, and we're lucky to have the oud. That's definitely worth something just by itself...
