That is one beautiful ... and beautiful sounding oud. If I was to get an Arabic oud I would come to Khalid Belhaiba - they are wonderful.
I am thinking of getting an Arabic oud but it will be some time in the future (£££$$$:rolleyes ... my first love is my Tasos 'Turkish' oud which I will always have ... it is a very special oud with a really
wonderful tone - but many people I meet over here have arabic ouds so it would be nice to have both ... and these seem to have a sound that would
complement my Tasos Theodorakis oud.
BTW what sort of price are these?
Fantastic ouds

Hi Leon,
Yes indeed, this are beautiful sounding ouds, for the professional ouds, it depends on the extra work, as rosettes, pegbox etc.
but all come between 800 and 1200 Euro per piece
you can find more info http://www.belhaibaoud.com.

Very beautiful ouds...one question...What kind of wood is used for the bowl of the second oud? It seems to be flame maple but its too dark-coloured

Hi sabbassi,
Thanks for the pic's, both ouds look great. The stained flamed maple is a great touch, the way it's carried through into the pegbox is very cool. The
angular ending of fingerboard on Majid's oud is a great touch, wish I could see the back of that one. Thanks for the pics.
Regards..paulO

Hi Sabbassi!
Did Khalid use rubin colored shellac for french polish to achieve this deep red?
His ouds are great for shure ... I will never forget the nice one you got yourself ... the one with the nice horn pickguard.

Chris,
The maple is first weted with water a bit and when dry you can use water colours for musical wood, you can find it in many coulours. the shellak is
used at the last stage.

Interesting. I asked, because when searching for shellac flakes, I found a German dealer, who has four different types ... the usual honey colored
shellac, a bleeched one, which is nearly colorless, the black one for pianos and the rubin shellac, which gives a wonderful deep red tone.

Leon, the name of the song is "Ya habibi taaala lhaani", Asmahan!
You are right, the style is definatly western. And that done on perpous: that was the "new age", modernization of the arabic music.
Here is the original version.. enjoy : )
