Intriguing oud. Is the face original? And any sound clips?

Yes, the face is original. I don't have any sound clip. Some of the pegs are broken . I did not replace any. Personally I don't think I should try to play it. It is pretty dry and I don't want to damage it while tuning. The neck may not bear the tension.

The neck might not bear tension? Is it loose?

first that this luthier is not of the first line, second, the workshop of this luthier is founded in 1887 but NOT the oud, surely that is made later, third 6999 dollars is a very high price for an oud who needs many arrangements and with a break of two ribs and for an entire change of the pegs, I do not believe that this price is just , according to my opinion, of course.

no, neck is not loose. it's just I don't want to put strings and tune it. I am afraid something might snap off and break given its age. And I don't know how long the instrument has not been played.

Where I come from it's up to the buyer to accept the price or negotiate.

It's important to point out the initial claim of "made in 1887" is perhaps wrong, because not everyone can read that the label says in French "company founded in 1887". When a text appears in French, Arabic or anything other than the forum standard English, it's very helpful for people to translate.

I wouldn't dream of buying it. So, other than pointing out technicalities, it's not up to me as a spectator to say it's unfair, unjust or anything other than one thing: to say it's too high for me.

I don't understand the culture of people who want to point out unfair, "my friend", even though nobody asked them. Isn't it up to involved parties to negotiate?

Anyone else have opinions?

OK, so the oud probably was not made in 1887--no big deal. An honest enough mistake.

But, I do think that the points raised above are valid.

If it has not been strung up so that one can see if the oud can even stand string tension, then that REALLY needs to be mentioned in the advertisement on ebay (it doesn't matter if a peg is broken or not--string up the rest of them). If you don't know if the oud is playable or not, that is fine, but that point needs to be mentioned. Will it fall apart under string tension? Is the neck so skewed that it is not even playable? The assumption, when buying an oud, is that it can be played and used as an oud. If this is not the case, then that should be noted.

There's a little discrepancy about the pegs--on this site, "some" of the pegs are broken, and on ebay, "one". No big deal, but still, for this kind of money, the description needs to be spot on, "warts and all".

As for the price--What the heck, go for whatever you can get. It was listed on ebay in the recent past for $7500, and now it is less. Is it worth it? The market will tell. I strongly doubt it (especially when Manols can be had at around this price). But, it's not for me to say.

I can't speak for other cultures but negotiating and bargaining isn't as much a part of the buying experience in America as it seems to be in a lot of other countries. It does happen but on a much smaller scale... you'd maybe negotiate within a 10% range or something whereas I've seen ouds listed for 40% more than the seller really expects.

Armenian Luthier Krikor Kahyayan , Istanbul based (1855-1922)
For more about the luthier see this :

I tend to believe this oud is from the 20th century
Good luck for both seller & buyer
