Anyone know this maker?
Hello,
I found this oud http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=623&... on ebay. Any advice?
The seller seems to have ouds from different countries. The shipping is $39 even though it says the location is Jerusalem, Israel.
Anyone know about the vendor and the ouds being auctioned?
Thanks,
Elie

Yes, it's a bit of a howler. The amoeba shaped pickguard and soundhole are particularly repulsive.

On the contrary, Hilal. I find that ouds are extremely inexpensive for the time invloved in making them. Given that you could buy a nice oud for
around $1000 (e.g.: Shehata, Ghadban, Sukar), that assumes if it takes the luthier 1 week (that's fast) to make a simple oud, he is only making
$25/hour gross. Take out operating expenses, insurance, materials, taxes, and your left with basically a little over minimum wage. Check out this article about Peter Kyvelos, one of the top luthiers in the country. We should be glad we can get ouds for a good price. If you had to buy a
decent oud from an American luthier, it would cots much more. I know that if I was making ouds professionally (I'm already a pro furniture
maker), I would have to charge several thousand in order to make anything, and that doesn't take into acount demand, which is pretty low.

Jameel,
Very nice and kind of sad article. I enjoyed reading it.
Somehow I wouldn't have thought that fiberglass backs would sound good for an oud or a guitar. Not a fan of the ovations with the plastic back,
I personaly think a lot of the sound is lost there, but they are expensive and people buy them.
Thank God he didn't make many more of these fiberglass back ouds.
Take care,
Elie

Thanks Jameel for ur reply. After taking what you mentioned itno account, I think the price of 3oods isn't that expensive. As you said, imagine
making 3oods in the US with American machinery and Labor, that retail price would be very high.

The dreaded name of Mouaffaq Khalifeh explains a lot about this oud!
