Hard Case
I ordered a Sukar 212 a week ago and am wondering about protecting it while traveling.
I have heard that even though it comes with a real hard case(not one of those pitiful plywood box things)I should not expect much protection from the
included hard case.
Are the Sukar hard cases really that bad?
Has anyone found a hard case they like?
Below are some of my search results but I'm lost as to who really makes a durable case.

Turkish cases look great, but they're small and maybe weigh less than others. Therefore Sukkar's 4/4 ouds don't actually fit into Turkish hardcases,
except maybe for this one I hadn't tried:

Arabic ouds generally have a larger bowl and longer neck thanTurkish.
A full size Arabic oud will not fit in a Turkish oud case.

I think I will purchase a soft case from Jameel http://www.khalafoud.com/cases.htm
Hopefully I can take it on planes and put it in the overhead compartment...has anyone had any luck with transporting their oud this way recently?

Hi, it all depends on the employees in the airport you are traveling from and often not even the airline employee. I've seen in Montreal, security
agents verifying each bag before getting into the departure zone (free zone). Believe me, whatever you bring along, it's got to fit in that little
box.. if it doesn't fit they send you back to the airline counter where you have to check the bag or oud...
In some other airports like Atatürk International Airport, no question asked until you get to the plane gate, where it's kinda too late for the
airline employee to check it.
So it really depends on the airport employees and obviously on the airline employee that takes your ticket to enter the plane.
I'd say go for it, just get to the gate counter at the last minute before the plane departs. In the plane, it usually fits, the oud fits, it's quite
large but then being the last to get on the plane, you'll have to remove other people's bags to have your oud in there... some people have many plane
hours in their nerves, so take it easy with them

good luck

I checked out the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) web site and found this...
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1235.sht...
The only problem I see is interpreting this paragraph...
"Check with your airline prior to your flight to ensure your instrument meets the size requirements for their aircraft."
I guess we need to call the airline ahead of time and ask if the oud measurements meet thier requirements.
Also found this in my web searches...

Hello Zulu,
I just returned from Egypt. I did carry one of my ouds for repair in a Jameel case. I used several airlines in te US and Europe. No one commented
about the case as a carry-on luggage. . It does fit in the overhead compartment with no issues.
Everyone has fallen in love with the case in Egypt. All the experts who saw it had nothing but praise about it.
I also saw an EXCELLENT hard case at Maurice's shop. You may contact him if you are still interested in getting a hard case. This one is for cargo
shipping.
Good luck,
Hatem
