The pegs of my oud don't hold.

I recently purchased an Egyptian Hand crafted Arabic Oud. Although, when I try tuning the instrument, as soon as I let go of the peg, it springs back. Is the process of tuning an oud the same as tuning a classical guitar? Or is it possible that my oud is defective?
