Online resources?
Hi Everyone,
First post here, and newbie to the Oud. I am having a hard time finding online resources for learning to play the Oud, and was hoping to get links to
great sites that you have had experience with. This will be really usefull for me, and potentially any newbie to the Oud as well.
Thanks in advance!

Hi
I'd recommend buying the oudproff dvd "Learn Maqamat on Oud"
http://cgi.ebay.com/LEARN-MAQAMAT-OUD-VERSION-2-OUD-BASICS-/2507018...
you can also visit his youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/OudProff
there is also http://www.maqamworld.com/ a useful site.
and http://www.oudcafe.com/
and of course http://www.mikeouds.com/video/learn.html
....
regards

Hi Ottawa~ Welcome to the forum!
I would suggest Youtube, which can be a treasure trove of watch, listen, and learn. You could begin by searching the following terms, for starters:
Arabic oud
Turkish oud
Armenian oud
Farid al Atrache
Richard Hagopian
Necati Celik
Munir Basheer
Afif Taian
Saz semaisi
Peshrev
Sarkilar
You will surely see and hear many players and their styles. How do they differ? What do they have in common, etc.

Thanks...I'm thinking of ordering the Learn Maqam DVD. That seems like the most comprehensive resource based on my searches...if any can weigh in
their experiences with it I would appreciate hearing them. Especially on the perspective of a BEGINNER learning the Oud.

I haven't had my hands on an oud yet, but when I do I know that this is the website I will be consulting first.
(Even a guitarist can understand it!).
