Murat Aydemir's "Turkish Music Makam Guide"
Hi - just wanted to put this out there since I have not really seen any sort of Turkish Makam guide book in a language other than Turkish before:

216 pages, comes with 2 CDs. I have a copy in hand but have not yet looked it over closely. I interviewed and recorded him several times for my PhD
dissertation on the subject (the forthcoming "The Theory and Praxis of Makam in Classical Turkish Music 1910-2010" - I'll post here when it's signed
off on, probably in June); I like his sense of the makam system.
Many of the makam-s he shows are rare/obscure; good to have something in English on these, especially. I'll write more on it here in a week or two (am
traveling/gigging now) but if anyone has read it, please comment below!

I got a copy of it from Pan last time I was there in October 2010. Above all it's amazing to have something in English at all!!!! It's nice and small,
compact and really well done, well organized.
On the accompanying CD, for each makam he shows 1 taksim and 1 composed piece. Either pesrev, saz semaisi or sarki, maybe there are a couple of
ilahis. The order of the makams through the book is nice, seems that the next makam is related to the previous. This could give you an idea for
obvious modulation.
Unfortunately the book doesn't leave a lot of space for an in depth look at each makam which is understandable. You get maybe one to three tricks
about the seyir at best. Doesn't talk to much about pitch and for sure does not talk about modulation or Meyan and this I miss.
Regardless all in all it's very very worth having!!

I recently got my University Library to buy this book and both the Cantemir books by Owen Wright.
This book is excellent.
It is very clear and useful for the non Turkish student of Turkish art music.
The seyir's of each makam are clearly defined and the examples are very useful, (in both the taksim and compositions).
It is very useful to be able to listen to the recordings (played on the Ottoman tanbur) and follow along in the book.

which cantemir books are you referring to? I only know those by Eugenia Popescu-Judetz...

They are pretty expensive!
Very good though ,
the main book with the tunes in it has about 350 pieces.
I am working on transposing some pieces from it at the moment.

550 pages.... should be it, right? On Amazon it's 150$ but I could just buy it from "other sellers" for 12 bucks...

True, my Uni brought both books, so I am not exactly sure how much they paid for them.
I will find out and would definitely be keen to own them, amazing books!
I had to reinstall Windows and have lost my transposition!!
How annoying!
Julian Weiss from Al Kindi has transcribed the same piece, but he has removed a couple of bars here and there, to make more coherent.
The piece is 'Bashraf Iraq Mukhalef', by Sayf Al Masry (Seyf El Misri).
His recording is on the 'Parfums Ottomans' album.
The CD comes with a few transcriptions too, very usefull.
