which strings to play on oud?

When I read the notes on the staff, how do I know which strings to play on my oud? Most often, I do not see a maqam to give me an idea. There are so many C's on my oud and so many A's etc. I may be very lost with what I am trying to say but if someone understands me and could give me some help, I would appreciate it.

The C below the staff is the 3rd finger on your A string. The C on the staff is your high C string. The D immediately under the staff is your open D string, and the G on the 2nd line of the staff is your open G string.

From there, you should be able to figure out where the notes are. Most oud music is written to be played in the open or 1st positions, so most notes only have one or 2 locations. If there are 2 or more locations, context should determine where you play the note.
Learning when to play which position is part of the process of learning, and there may be more than one usable fingering.

good luck!
