Cocobolo

Today I have come across a very old and beautiful piece of wood.: Cocobolo. I couldn't resist it and although it is an expensive wood. so I took it home and had very good look at it before i started cutting.

it is 115cm cm long 4,5 thick, and 34 cm wide.

Luckily the crack (see picture) stops far away form the safe 70cm needed for the ribs.

for now I have cut only 19 ribs needed of one oud,

The wood is so nice inside with some figures.

Does any one have a picture of a cocobolo oud? or any experience. it would be nice to share.

It is a true rosewood and seems to have very good tonal qualities

Hi Samir,
this will be a beautifull oud. Saad al Tayyar who is a master instrument maker, has built many ouds out of cocobolo. Its a beautifull wood that produced a very nice sounding oud.

You must be carefull though because its an oily wood so choose wisely which adhesive and finish you will use. Because the natural oils in the wood can affect them greatly.

cant wait to see it come to life :)

No, but of an acoustic guitar:

Cocobolo is sounding similar to Brazilian rosewood, but it looks much nicer ;)

I bet shellac will be a great choice, or am I wrong? It would definitly look fantastic.

Hi Chris, Samir

I guess the only way to find out is to make a Cocobolo oud :)

this piece or cocobolo was found by chance in a big log.

Difficult to work with the swirls though, a rasor sharp planner did the job. because the cocobolo is a bit oily itself, is is a pleasure to work with. cleaning the joints with naphtha before using the glue is a must.

The left side of the bowl has also some boomatching.

Samir, i'm not surprised anymore with your art since i received my repaired oud from you this summer. you always strive for better quality and beauty.

I haven't been able yet to announce my repaired oud by you due to my limited time with uni work. but soon a review will be out about the reborn oud dream by you.

cheers
