Timbre and Tonality

Has anyone else noticed that the "voicing" (the tone quality or timbre) of a Turkish oud lends itself to the varieties of Turkish/Armenian/ Greek intonation and that Arabic pitches sound not quite right with this kind of oud voice.? Arabic ouds seem to sound ok with these non-Arabic pitches and of course the varieties of Arabic pitches sound just right on ouds with an "Arabic Voice".

I am wondering if this perception is just a matter of my conditioning or whether I'm on to something more substantial than a certain timbre/pitch combo meeting my expectations.

The fact that a violin, for instance, can be made to sound viable in any of these musics makes me suspect that my idea is spurious.

Any thoughts?
