Distintive Sound from Oud

Hey Everyone,
This has been killing me for a while now, as i listen closely and focus on M. Abdel Wahab's Oud playing in songs like Daret El Ayam, Sit el habayeb and most of his oud solo songs. His Oud or the sound recorded is just sounds awesome, i just do not get it!! why does his sound come out sounding strong, and less of a wood / timber sound and more robust, strong, i just cannot describe it..
can anyone help achieve this timbre/sound..... i know and understand that i am nothing like him in the Oud world and i will never be , but i would love to get that sound from my oud.... does he use different strings, custom made oud, What is it???

Thanks in Advanced.

Danny, join the club my friend. We all want to sound like Mohammed Abdel Wahab, or any of the great players from that era. Of course, most of them played great instruments and so do most of us on these forums. My personal view is that it is a combination of the instruments produced in that era and, more importantly, the heart and hands of those great players.
Two people can pick up and play the same instrument and sound completely different. It's maddening for those of us who do not have the gifts to achieve greatness. But we can have a great time trying
