Hi Friends...
...does anyone have any tips on the best way to make an oud with a cutaway?

Burhan Cesni from Turkey makes some similar ouds. There are some other models by Fadi Matta(Lebanon), Kave Ghorbanzade and Arafati (Iran) which you maybe interested in.

you can find Kave and Burhan on facebook.

Yes Fadi's design is the most complicated model I've ever seen and probably a little tricky. other models shouldn't be a problem (for you of course, not me :D )

this is from Kave's facebook profile:

The Fati design is really inspiring - I would not do it just like that but it is inspiring how it is possible to twist and alter the basic shape somewhat. . . I wonder just how he does it?

Although this oud was masterfully constructed by Fadi Matta, a difficult task that I believe very few luthiers would have achieved the way Fadi did, the design was done by me. It was a process that took place right here on the forums with the help, encouragement, and great suggestions from many members here specially my friend John Downing.

The oud was first a geometrical concept and I first "virtually" designed and constructed it using a 3D software. then I constructed the solid mold, Fadi took it from there and made the real oud. It took him 2 months of work and chose to put the #1 on the label with our both names.

The ribs, before bending, were planar but not linear. their shape was calculated by a "UV unwrapping" 3D software. Fadi constructed the bowl very slowly as the wood needs time to take the double axis bending.

Although the design itself is registered in my name, I really don't mind that someone can be inspired to take it further, add to it, make it better instead of just copying it without an added creativity or added value.
The sound revealed to be very nice and clean and after 4 years of construction the oud showed a perfect structural integrity, no deformations, no cracks, still as perfect as the first day.
here are some photos of the process:

my friend i have no words to express HOW MUCH I LOVE this thing....
my big question is how did he twisted the ribs....
perhaps a photo of a rib ready to be glued would be a good idea!!
but anyway all those photos are very helpfull...
You Sir are a genius...
total repect and this is the most astonishing thing i have ever seen in my whole life...
any further photos would be helpfull to understand this ....
Greetings from Greece!!

I also watched him a little, building this beauty. No pictures can really show how the ribs were twisted. Amazingly impressive and perfectly executed.
How he corrected the initial bowl and made it into a new special bowl, is also unbelievable!

Hi Alami, hope you're doing great! Just a small suggestion, which is to add a pic of the bowl that Fadi Matta made after he adjusted the initial toast rack you have made. I think that possibly the most delicate and difficult part for Fadi was to make the new bowl...

Cheers!
