Headstone

Hello again, since I mentioned Hamza El Din's 1917 Abdo Nahat in the recent collection of photos I posted of another old and beautiful oud, I thought I would add this. When Hamza passed away in 2006, he was buried in Valley Memorial in Novato, California. His headstone is engraved simply with his name and dates, and with the shamsa of his magnificent oud that bears a diagram of the maqamat. About the maqamat, Hamza taught that music moves the soul through them like a bowl of water, passed around from hand to hand without spilling a drop. There was no one like him. (If anyone responds to this post, PLEASE let us avoid the subject of who has the oud now, and who deserves to have it, OK? Thankx!) - Daniel
