Ney in cairo
hello, i apologize for asking questions about ney in this forum, which seems very oud orientated, but i thought some of you might still be able to
give me some advise.
I'm currently in Cairo and will be here for the next two weeks, after starting to learn the nay at the end of last year, i thought this would be a
good opportunity to finally buy some proper instruments. (a set of ney and Kawala)
i also study ethnomusicology in London and am interested in learning more generally about music in this city, any music, all music, and getting some
more instruction in how to play.
if anybody can help me, give me advise on how to get in contact with good instrument makers (Ive written to the kawala player Saber Ali allready but
am awaiting a responce,) or is in town and would like to help me find amazing music, I would be very thankful.

I will be studying ethnomusicology in London this Autumn. Which university are you at?
What kind of information do you want about music in London? Styles/venues, what's popular? As you can imagine, a lot of musical styles are popular
here. As for Middle-Eastern classical, it is popular but performances are quite thin on the ground. I always keep my eyes open for oud perfomances but
they don't happen that often.

Lysander, im studying at SOAS in london, its the only place i know off with an undergranduate degree in ethnomusicology, so perhaps you will be there
too? if not, then there are good thing happening there musically all the time so you should check it out.

the summer academy looks very interesting, also it would be great if you could introduce me to Mohamed, (electronically) as an advise would be great.
it seems this is a difficult city to be in when one cant speak arabic, and most of the young people I meet here who speak English are just confused
when I ask about traditional and classical music. so it would be great if your friend could point me in a direction at least.

If no one in the Forums has any better ideas, I would suggest going to the most "serious" of the shops on Mohammad Ali St., Gawharet El Fan, and
asking there. Neither Shehata's website nor Gawharet El Fan's website seem to be functioning at full capacity (no contact info up). Shehata's
workshop is more out of the way.
Maybe ask on Mohammad Ali St. who Dr. Scott Marcus studies with when he's in town. It didn't seem to hurt when I was on Mohammad Ali St. that I'm
friends with "Doktor Scott."  I guess you could try asking Dr. Scott himself--
scottmarcu@aol.com -- if he knows any nay teachers in Cairo.
