Tuning Oud

Hi All,

Thanks for being so supportive a community.

I was wondering if anyone could direct me in tuning my first Oud? I have automatic tuning software on my smartphone that will allow me to choose the instrument to which I will tune my own. Can someone direct which instrument to choose? I was told that one should tune the Oud according to the Double C Banjo setting. Is this right?

Many thanks for your help.

Tuning varies because of style (arabic , turkish, iraqi etc)

a nice and very understandable site with basics, tuning and more

"Double C" banjo tuning is gCGCD. the little g is for the short string on the banjo. Oud has no short strings and is not tuned like this. However:if you are using Arabic tuning you can tune your highest double course to the second string of this banjo tuning. The C is the same. And you can tune the second double course of your oud to the G of the third banjo string. After that you have to use your ears and common sense.
