Beware of Fake Wittner-like Finetune Pegs
This's what Wittner company wrote to its customers worldwide.
We all should support Wittner and avoid replicas of the original great geared pegs of the company.
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
To our great dismay we noticed that imitations of our Finetune-Pegs are on offer which infringe our protective rights in many countries.
These offers are sent to wholesalers and luthiers, sometimes by using our own WITTNER artwork.
Therefore we have to inform our customers and business friends about this unpleasant situation (please see attached circular).
Please pass on our circular also to your customers.
Further you're kindly requested to inform us whenever you come across copies or offers of copies of our PATENTED Finetune-Pegs.
Thank you very much in advance for your support.
Sincerely yours,
Horst & Sabrina Wittner

Hi,
there are the following options:
The model you have to choose depends from the diameter and length of the existing pegs. Measure them and compare it with that of he Wittner pegs. Then
it will be clear which one you have to choose.
Best regards

Oud pegs will be produced in the near future, as I have been told by the Wittners. Well, hopefully. Nobody could assure when this shall happen, so for
the time being, viola pegs are good for ouds. See Matthias's list.

hello! thank you for this warning.
on a side note, i was acutally looking for a cheaper version of wittner pegs. of course, illegal use of wittner's name or patent should be condemned,
but if someone were to develop a cheaper generic version, i think i could be interested.

Knilling Perfection Pegs Viola Planetary Geared Tuners are cheaper originals. You may get 12 for 210$ … I haven't tried them myself, but some
friends did and said they are OK. Knilling suggests transmission ratio of 1:4, while Wittner's ratio is 1:8, which makes them more precise, but 1:4
is good enough for ouds.
There are some more of course, but not cheaper than Wittner.
All choices are available at the e stores around the web.
Good luck
Yours indeed

These are my favorite. They're great quality, beautiful mechanism and so far none of broken down on any of my clients. Also never seen any bootlegs..

hello Matthias, hello all,
ok, i have earmarked the money for geared pegs.... if it can help me tune better, than it is an investment i will make.
i have a technical question please: i have seen the dimmensions for the viola and violin pegs, but still not sure how to compare this to the peg box
of my sukar oud.
the peg holes on my oud's pegbox is 8mm diameter on the larger (entrance) side, and 6mm on the narrower side. The width between the two is 36mm to
26mm (depending if the peg is at the base or the tail-end of the pegbox.
which model should i go for (from the Wittner or the Perfection products)?
many thanks

[rquote]Take the shortest and longest peg out of the pegbox and take alle themeasurements which are listed in Wittttner table.[/ rquote]

I mostly used the viola pegs as the violin ones have a smaller head and are probably too short. The 8,6 mm diameter should be good.
