Who is the player?

Hi all!

I was wondering if anyone can help me out by identifying the person playing this taqasim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifgclvBsU_c

One of the comments says that it is Farid El Atrash playing this taqasim. I kind of doubt it because it really is different from anything I've heard from him, especially around the 2:25 mark where some very unfamiliar phrasing is taking place. However, I am no Farid expert so if anyone can confirm or deny this I would appreciate it.

Also, does it seem like this track is being sped up?

Thanks :)

Hi,
I Think it's Ibrahim Hobiyaqa (or Hobyeqa) in arbic: ابراهيم حبيقة

i haven't heard of him but i think brian is right, listen to this taqsim (labeled maqam ushaq) by hobiyaqa, the recording and playing style sound very similar.

His style is similar to that of the mysterious Zakaria Suleyman.

http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=14843#pid10...

compare the Rast of ZS with the ushaq of IH. the pitch is exactly the same and the use of risha is the same and the slides up to the high octave of nawa (at the junction of neck and body) is similar as is the full bell-like quality of the tone at high pitch even when slowed down and the pitch lowered (yes, this recording is sped up a bit).

if Ibrahim Hobiyaqa and Zakaria Suleyman are not one and the same perhaps they have learned from the same person or one is teacher and one is student. Or they are brothers. :-)

here is the ZS hizaz:

Back to the original post of this thread and the oudist identified as Ibrahim Hobiyaqa: on my monitor there are no comments at all on the youtube page so I don't see one saying this player is Farid Al Atrash. At any rate, he is someone else with a different touch.

Thanks Brandioud! :)

Yes Masel, that ushaq taqseem is very similar to the bayati one, so it would seem that we might have found our culprit though the similarities between these and the hijaz/rast taqseem by Zakariya Sulieman that Jody posted are uncanny, especially the way they make use of the gliss. At any rate, I'm glad I've been introduced to two (or perhaps one :)) very incredible players.

Thanks all!
