Looking for mid-level Turkish oud for purchase
Hello,
This is my first post here. I am seriously considering purchasing a Turkish oud and beginning to learn. There is a skilled oud teacher where I live
in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma--amazing as that may seem.
I would like to purchase a mid-level Turkish oud in the price range of $1000 to $1500. While I enjoy listening to oud music of all types, I seem to
enjoy most the Turkish audits that I've heard on the internet. Yurdal Tokcan is a favorite, among others.
I've checked the internet for makers and have found several makers, but I don't know how to choose between them or if there are other reputable
makers:

Hello Matthew,
I've played ouds made by everyone on your list other Emir Degirmenli. *I* prefer the Türünz reduced price by a good bit. For me, the sound is just
perfect, pure, and beautiful, and the workmanship is incredible. The Mustafa Copcuoglu ouds I've played were equally well made, and they had a very
nice sound. To me they were just a little bit too buzzy, but some Turkish players like that, and it's possible you could reduce the "buzziness" by
raising the knots on the bridge, etc.. I also liked the Yildirim ouds I've played. They're less expensive than either Türünz or Copcuoglu, but I
didn't think they were QUITE as well made in terms of the finish work, and I preferred the sound of the former two. To be honest, I wasn't crazy
about the Sarikus ouds I've seen and played, but that could certainly just be an issue of personal preference.
I would vote for either a Türünz or a Copcuoglu, with Türünz a bit in front. But you should probably listen to some recordings of them all and
see if you can determine which sound you like most.

I agree with David that Faruk's ouds will not let you regret buying them in terms of craftsmanship. He is simply a perfectionist.
However, their sound is an individual category. They don't sound Arabic and don't sound pure Turkish, even the ones made for Turkish tuning.
I have experience with Yildirim ouds, the spruce top ones "speak" Turkish, the cedar ones tend to sound Arabic.
I would also suggest that you try to listen to ouds made by Ramazan Calay, Ali Nisadir and Mehmet Caymaz. They make impressive ouds.
And one other oud maker, could be even better than all the ones we mentioned above, Ender Goktepe. I think this guy is a real perfectionist.
I suggest first you decide the sound type you want, may be the tuning you use, then make a short list based on that.

Thanks all for the very informative and helpful replies! I should clarify that I am looking for an oud that can be tuned to the higher Turkish tuning
but in all reality I will probably tune it to a lower Arabic tuning for the first couple of years since the repertoire that I will be learning will
probably be Arabic in origin since my prospective teacher, Neal Callen Clark, knows and teaches that. He has some knowledge of Ottoman and Turkish
music and a great interest in learning more. I suspect that for the first few years I will be learning oud songs from many oud traditions.
I found a Facebook page for Ramazan Calay and Ender Goktepe but no contact info for Nisadir or Caymaz . Does anyone have contact info for Nisadir or
Cayman?
