It says Roufan Nahat. Label looks similar to one authenticated by Richard Hankey:
http://www.droud.com/Roufan.html
Stylistically looks correct and original to me.
1881 would be the date that he established his own shop, I think (rather than Ikhwan Nahat), and the later date would be the actual date of the
oud.

Hello Oud Proff,
Yes its an authentic 1919 Roufan Nahat... the oud is ORIGINAL...
Yes I agree with you it's quite expensive compared to the prices of the old days... the problem is how to got the instrument out of Syria??????
Their is nothing to guarantee you that the instrument will arrive safely... or nothing will happen to the poor man who will deliver it....this is so
sad , complicated and very frustrating ....
This is an excellent Oud made by the master Roufan who was the second important maker in the Nahat Family.
Good luck,
Adel

Dear Oud Proff , my advice to you is to cherish the instrument and look after it ... May you children enjoy it as much as you ... This is a very rare
authentic original Roufan nahat . It has been looked after very well and very well treated , do not let it go ... I knew about this oud a while ago
and I was told at that time that it was in Syria ... Mabrouk and ENJOY this great treasure ... Best wishes, Adel

Dear Alfaraby,
Thanks a lot my friend. I sure remember reading that post of yours years back, and enjoying it much back then. It actually never occurred to me I
would have such a rare chance to put my hands on this kind of oud. Therefore, I know I'm lucky !
Will post pictures after the maintenance is done in this Old Baby !
What do you recommend for strings?? I'm looking for some high quality "low tension" set....... any suggestions, keeping in mind I strongly prefer the
bassy sound of an oud, rather than treble?! I tried Aquilla before......but wasn't quite content with the results.
And yes, it's the one in the picture
Anyways, thanks again; يبارك فيك صديقي
Kindest regards,

Thanks friend
Don't believe any story you have been told about this oud. It has been offered for a long time, but no one paid what you seemingly were willing to
pay. It's not a secret anymore: It has been offered for a fair price , compared to what I had paid on August 15, 2010 What a coincidence !!
I hope you didn't pay much more; however you still are the lucky party of this bargain.
I'd recommend Pyramid Lute low tension set for antique ouds offered by Brian at http://www.oudstrings.com. Probably the best for such an old timer. Take the 61+ scale set, 650, 750 rectified nylon for c, g and the silver
coated copper wound for d, unless you like the nylon sound for d strings. I'd tune it half step lower (F sharp for g) if not a whole tone downward (F
for g).
Good luck friend
Yours indeed

Thank Algaraby for your thoughts on this.
There have been few twists and turns before closing the deal, but I'm happy with the ending.
Will keep y'all posted sometime soon.

Roufan 1919 update
OKAY
I hope all beloved members at Mike's are doing just grrr8 !
Would like to update you on my Roufan Nahhat 1919 oud status.
So, as you can imagine, 96 years are sufficient to take their toll on a wooden oud. Thankfully, however , this historic piece of art have been well taken care of.
I've done some serious and very careful cosmetic work on this old guy, and am quite happy with the final outcome. Pictures below show the "before" and
"after" state of the oud. Tried different oud strings (not Pyramid lute yet though), with variable results.
Here's a video recording:

Thanks everyone who shared passion, consultation and advice on this matter. It means a lot !
All the best,

Well done !
Please provide a better quality shots of the "after" condition. This does not show quite anything.
As to the recording, it sounds great for it's Sunbati's taqseem and your playing but not for this specific "effected" sound of the oud , though we might hear the potential of this 96 years old son of a gun.
It's always highly recommended to record an oud in pure acoustic environment with no effects whatsoever. None.
Thus we might be able to hear the real hoarse sound of this old bastard.
Thank you
Yours indeed

I would be interested to hear it played closer to the bridge. Is that a nylon third string?

Dear fellows, Alfaraby and Ameer:
Thanks for the feedback.
Here are more closeup shots for the "after" work.
Gladly, no sound effects were used in that recording whatsoever, just a simple video recording from a mobile cam ! So, I'd take that as an additional
compliment for that "son of a gun".
Ameer, I was holding the oud as it felt comfortable with my hands, didn't pay much attention to the distance from the bridge.
Thanks all !
