Found oud at flea market
I hope someone can help me with my questions about my oud.
I bought my oud from a flea market for $55. There are some strings missing and the knobs are hard to turn . The knobs slip a lot and i'm worried about
my instrument not staying tuned.
Also I would like to know what type of oud I have and what strings I need to buy . Should I replace the knobs? I'm a complete beginner and hope to
start practicing asap .

Good strings cost more than 55$ , so you have had a great deal. It seems
healthy but needs some basic maintainance jobs, like re-adjusting the pegs, replacing the strings, checking the action, leveling the fingerboard ..
etc. You may as well choose to replace the bridge and the pickguard, but these are upgrading not necessarily needed jobs. After theses are done, it
might turn to be a very good oud. All depends on the sound quality. If it sounds like an oud, then you have been extra lucky. If it sounds like a
table, then hang it on your saloon wall as a decorative item.
Where are you located ? You may be very near to some of our luthier friends, one of whom may be able to help you resurrect your instrument.
Good luck

Thanks for your reply Alfaraby . I live near Houston Texas. I'm thinking about finding the luthier friends you are suggesting. I found some strings
for
$17 on amazon. They are Pyramid brand oud strings. Do you think this strings will sound good enough to get me started?

I am 4 hours away in DFW.
Based on the design it looks like a Turkish oud. It probably has a scale length of 58.5 CM but you can measure from nut to bridge to know for sure.
Before people can recommend strings they need to know what your desired tuning will be. Do you know?
