Oudmigrations: a new website about ouds
Dear friends,
I'm happy to introduce a new website / blog about the oud. I hope you will enjoy browsing it, and that you will click on Follow to receive updates of
new posts.
Oudmigrations is intended to be a collaborative platform for research into the journies and transformations of (antique) ouds. So far 5 writers have
written or offered to write specialist articles, and we hope this will expand. If you would like to contribute, either with information or with an
article, please do get in touch, using the website's contact form.

Wow, quite neat website .. Good job ..
But I'm finding the name quite odd "oudmigration" ..
Migration of something suggests that it moved from one place and settled into another .. The Oud did spread to different countries through several
civilisations but it did not actually migrate!
Just a thought!
Onwards and upwards

Great job, cool design and great information.
However, if the intent is to have this as a research platform, I recommend having references or resources section for the articles in case you want to
dig deeper into the facts and history of the article.
Again, thank you for sharing, really nice site.
regards,
Humam

Youssef Nahat
Interesting information about Youssef Nahat . The oldest oud until today is that of Yousssef Nahat 1878 . Probably it is not the father but the
brother of Abdo, Roufan , Hanna, Georgy ....

Thank you for the comments. Yes, adding references is something ahead...! I didn't want it to be too academic, but posts that are going out in the
next months are drawn from sources that will be listed.
Does anyone know anything about Yousif Nahat? Is this our only trace of him?

I would hedge my bet with Alfaraby on this forum. He seems to be the fountain of all nahat related knowledge.

I only have a photo and unsubstantiated info, but here's a 1786 Nisan oud

The oldest Nahhat Picture I have is 1879 Abdo George.

Yousef Al Nahat 1878

Thank you, Mehran. I don't deserve this credit.
شغل يوسف النحات في دمشق
الشام سنة 1878 Label
I have been researching the Nahat legacy for years now. For this purpose, I have contacted many people around the world, especially in Syria, in order
to get to know some reliable information about Nahat brothers. My contacts in Damascus, in a once in a life time opportunity, checked out the Greek
Orthodox Patriarchate registries, in order to reveal the family pedigree and dates of birth of the family members . They also had visited the cemetery
of the community and examined the headstones - like Tuco in "The Good , the Bad and the Ugly" immortal movie did – in order to verify the dates of
death of whom he'd found buried in this graveyard. Based on these detective efforts, I was able to draw the family tree and publish it worldwide, both
in Arabic & English. Another famous and reliable among oud fans family chart, was blown up and gone with the wind.
The story tells that Yousef Nahat (1781) had had 3 children, George (1827), Demetri (1831) and Elias (1833). George had 4 children, Rofan, Abdo,
(Nahat Bro), Antoine & Hanna. Abdo's son, Elias, worked as an oud maker for his father and Hanna's sons, Toufiqe and George (GHN), continued
making ouds after their father had passed away back in 1934. Altogether, there were 7 Nahat active oud makers between 1880-1985; none of them was
named Yousef after his great grandfather.
This oud is not new to me at all, for I have been asked by a respectful British professor to help solving this puzzle a year or so ago. I rushed to my
data-base and found absolutely nothing, so I contacted my references in Damscus asking who's Yousef Nahat, but they all stuttered trying to recall who
he might be and they all assured they've never heard of that name before. I continued inquiring this dilemma for the coming couple of months without
much success, so I had to give up and apologize to my British friend for not being of any help, very frustrating for a diligent hard-working student
like myself. But I don't give up this easily, so I resumed the research.
This oud was made, as the label tells, in Damascus, by Yousef Al Nahat Syria, in 1878, two years before the Nahat Brothers partnership was
established. The super HQ craftsmanship assures that this was not made by an apprentice or a beginner and that the oud maker was an accomplished
luthier at that stage meaning he should have been in his forties or so. One may therefore conclude the maker was born some when in the thirties of the
19th century, so he just can't be the son of either Elias (1831) nor Demetri (1833), sons of Yousef Al Nahat the great grandfather of the family. He's
not the great grandfather himself either, since he'd be 107 years of age at that time !
Therefore I may dare and say that this maker is not a member of the Nahat family we all know.
-The Beginning-
to be continued ..
Happy Easter to you all
Yours indeed

On this new website there are some nice clear images of instrument #0164 in the Musical Instrument Museum in Brussels - an early seven course 'oud
akmal' acquired from Egypt in the 19th C by Belgian musicologist Francoise-Joseph Fetis and later presented to the Museum. It is similar to but larger
than a seven course oud described and illustrated by French scholar Guillaume-Andre Villoteau, member of the Napoleon expedition to Egypt in the late
18th C.
The article posted on the new website 'Alexandria to Brussels 1839' gives some dimensions that are attributed to measurements made by Fetis on the oud
that he purchased (i.e. now the Brussels instrument #0164). However these dimensions appear to be in error and not those of instrument #0164 but the
dimensions recorded by Villoteau in his text of 'Description de l'Egypte' , 'Des Instrumens de Musique, Premiere Partie, Chapitre Premier, De
l'e,oud'- pages 221 to 246.
Villoteau does not provide a vibrating string length for his oud but I would estimate from the dimensions he does record to have been around 590 mm
(compared to oud #0164 string length of 637 mm).
I made a brief study of these two instruments about 5 years ago - some of my findings are reported on this forum as well as being published in FoMRHI.
The FoMRHI articles - Comm 1944 and Comm 1948 are published in FoMRHI Quarterly/Bulletin 119, July 2011 available for free download from the FoMRHI
website (Google search). The dimensions of oud #0164 included in Comm 1944 were provided to me by the Brussels MIM.
Comm. 1948 refers to the damaged original case that belongs to oud #0164 that again is similar to the engraving of the oud case provided by Villoteau.

The erroneous statement in the article 'Alexandria to Brussels 1839' on the new website has now been removed.
A link to the two FoMRHI Comms. on oud #0164 and its case - for those interested - is here - free to download
