Photo of Nude lady in belly of oud 1928
Hello
I am trying to get some info on an oud I just acquired in Watertown Massachusetts (Metro Boston Area). Rather than a name of the maker, there is an
old photo of a nude women inside the belly. Attached is a partial image (I hope it uploaded). Does anyone know anything about this oud or the maker?
Can anyone translate the arabic? Thanks!

The rosette seems to be getting in the way of some possibly useful information.
Sorry I can't help...myself
Really fascinating though!

The label says:
Work of Abu Salim Al Arabeelli, Boston, Mass. America in 1928, Hudson Street.
On the left: Paradise is in the natural gardens.
The only missing info is the nude
I've heard from a couple renowned luthiers/restorers that they've seen nudity photos in some old ouds. I haven't.
!!! Never heard of this gentleman before, nor seen any of his ouds.
Yours indeed

Thank you so much Alfaraby! Very help info!
Yes, I will post photos of the actual Oud.
Gotta keep it clean guys. After all, don't want to get kicked off this forum!
Besides they say "less is more". Ha!
Thanks for your comments!
Best,

This is quite a remarkable coincidence.
I purchased and restored an oud by the same maker this year, and have been planning to post the instrument for sale.
I bought it in Hudson, New York, and while the face was in pristine condition, the strings were ancient, and the oud seemed to have not been played or
loved for quite some time.
The label is quite different and disappointingly dry in comparison with this charming one. In fact, it features no manufacturing date, but simply a
repair date of 1943.
The fingerboard appears to be Brazilian rosewood. This oud plays quite nicely and has a beautiful sound!
I will formally post a link on the Buy & Sell thread soon, but for those who are interested, here is a video featuring Najib Shaheen, who restored
the instrument with great care: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpoZE9n7pWg

Hi Conroystoptime
Wow! What an interesting thread!
As promised, here are some photos of my nude oud lady oud.
Any opinions, comments, estimates of what it may be worth, would be greatly appreciated.
Oh...the little tiny white sticky things are my cheat cheats for tuning.
(It looks like I may need to do more than one post due to file size)
Best,
Koukla

Well, it looks in a great condition for a 88 years old instrument. High action though, but it's reversible by a professional. It all depends on the
sound. If it produces great sound, it might be of 4 digits value, and if it doesn't, it will surely drop down to small 3 digits number. I just can't
be more precise, excuse me. The maker is not such a famous luthier in order to estimate his work without listening, like we sometimes do when a
Nahat's is involved.
See this for example: Abdo Nahat 1923, would it really matters how it really sounds like ?
So let us hear it playing .. please !
Good luck
Yours indeed

Ok Alfaraby
I will try to get someone to play it for me. Need to change the strings first. (I am a beginner, so I know you certainly don't want to hear me try
to play it!). I would very much like to hear a professional play it as well to REALLY hear what it sounds like.
Thanks,
Koukla

Just passing through and noticed about Abou Selim Abreely as spelled on my November 1936 oud label. I had posted about the oud maker in the past
without any response. He built Arabic ouds with the neck dovetailed not doweled. Good to see there is another who owns one.
