Halabi oud

This oud was inspired by the classic designs coming from old Aleppo. 600 scale. Beautiful rich delicate tone.

Hello John,

thats an interesting design. In spite I do have many aoud pictures in my collection, but from Al-Halabi or other instruments in that style there is none. So my question is, do you or anyother here in the forum have any picture of original instruments? That would be interesting.

Thanks in advance
Matthias

Matthias,

Ouds of Hallaq, and Hayek were a bit plain, not much bling, and always sounded good. Rarely without purfling around the soundhole. Also often with 1 soundhole. Of course this is not an exact copy, but in the basic theme.

The Hallaq and Hayak ouds here were modified later, the extended fingerboards not being original of course.

I tend to define Aleppian ouds mostly by their longer oval body form and larger and colored ribs... less decoration around the sound holes could also be an indication, but many Qandalaft ouds have crowded soundboards.

This Arja from Tripoli 1892, single sound hole seems to be a close (old) cousin too.
Actually Tripoli-Lebanon is closer to Aleppo than Damascus and used to be connected by a direct railway extension of the Orient Express around this period.

It's true that this is a bit wider/stouter than the usual Aleppo oud, but it looks great anyway.
Very curious to hear how that "torrefied" spruce sounds. Guess I'll have to come up for another visit!

A video is coming. Typically I use my crappy camera's video recording feature, which is a very poor quality, as a result none of my recordings are a good depiction of the work. Expect a proper recording in a few days :) But of course it's best to always hear things in person.
